Room of the Week: The Modern Makeover of an Industrial Kitchen
An industrial-style family kitchen gets a modern makeover in an urban apartment
“Whatever you do, save the stainless-steel benchtop.” This was the condition given to Jag Kitchens for the renovation of this inner-city loft apartment. And with a little imagination and a lot of heft, that’s exactly what they did.
Brief
The homeowners wanted a clean, modern kitchen with plenty of storage.

Starting point
The starting point was to reuse the existing stainless-steel benchtop, so the design needed to follow the existing footprint.

Key design aspects
Colour palette: Grey/white and stainless steel.
Materials palette: Stainless steel was the lead material for benchtop and appliances. The kitchen cabinets mostly have gloss acrylic fronts, with several open boxes in a dark grey melamine to display items. There were also polished timber floorboards throughout. The block wall was existing and the splashback is a large-format porcelain tile.

Key pieces of furniture:
The Blum Space Tower larder unit is a storage wonder, providing a built-in pantry cupboard. The splashback is a single, large-format porcelain tile. The homeowner added a Model Schwan SC60 Swivel Tap boiling water tap to the kitchen. There is also a Fisher & Paykel wall oven and range hood.

Thinking behind the arrangement of furniture
The design was restricted by the desire to keep the existing, hardwearing stainless-steel benchtop. The homeowner also wanted her children to be able to eat at the breakfast bar. The cabinet design includes many inner drawers (which can’t been seen in the photos). These help the family get organised and make the best use of the space. Open boxes break up the space and allow the display of artwork and cookbooks. LED downlights inside the open boxes enhance the display.

Challenges you worked around
The existing steel benchtop had to be cut out… this was a major exercise using specialist stainless fabricators and plenty of lifting power to remove the massive benchtop prior to the cabinet extraction.

Why do you think this room works?
This room works because it is easy-care with plenty of drawer storage.
