This Seattle remodel of a Greenlake house involved lifting the original Sears Roebuck home 12 feet in the air and building a new basement and 1st floor, remodeling much of the original third floor. The kitchen features an eat-in nook and cabinetry that makes the most of a small space. This home was featured in the Eco Guild's Green Building Slam, Eco Guild's sponsored remodel tour, and has received tremendous attention for its conservative, sustainable approach. In the Jefferson Park neighborhood of Chicago, an American Bungalow is the perfect place to celebrate the American craftsmanship of custom cabinetry from Greenfield Cabinetry – handmade in the Midwest.
Designer Fred M. Alsen, the most thoughtful of design talents, believes details are worth obsessing over. Design on your terms, Fred takes his design cues from your lifestyle. The custom, Quarter Sawn Oak cabinets – are a nod to the American Bungalow style of the home.
The Liebherr refrigerator – a nod to the homeowners’ desire for a narrower fridge. The red accents, the homeowner’s favorite color.

This custom, high-performance home was designed and built to a LEED for Homes Platinum rating, the highest rating given to homes when certified by the US Green Building Council. The house has been laid out to take maximum advantage of both passive and active solar energy, natural ventilation, low impact and recyclable materials, high efficiency lighting and controls, in a structure that is very simple and economical to build. The envelope of the house is designed to require a minimum amount of energy in order to live and use the home based on the lifestyle of the occupants. The home will have an innovative HVAC system that has been recently developed by engineers from the University of Illinois which uses considerably less energy than a conventional heating and cooling system and provides extremely high indoor air quality utilizing a CERV (conditioned energy recovery ventilation system) combined with a cost effective installation.

In this remodel of a very small kitchen, we designed it to claim every bit of space. The kitchen was opened up to the dining room and windows were added toward the back yard for a sense of a larger space.
