This garden was designed to celebrate panoramic views of the San Gabriel mountains. Horizontal bands of slate tile from the interior of the mid-century home wrap around the house’s perimeter and extend to the rear pool area, inviting the family outdoors. With a pool framed by mature trees, a sunken seating area, fruit trees, and a modest lawn for a young family, the landscape provides a wide range of opportunities for play, entertaining and relaxation.

Detail of the concrete plinth. I created an angle to the plinth to suggest entry to the hot tub level below and keep it feeling more open. I have found the angles in walls and gardens really matters to be of correct scale. The concrete plinth is for a bench, buffet overflow from BBQ counter or here with planters it acts as a screen to the area below.

This modern interpretation of a zen garden was created to replace a water-hungry lawn. Succulents and other drought tolerant plants will soften the transition of the linear concrete and gravel patio into the existing stack stone raised planting areas. A deck and pergola add a shaded dining area in the hot afternoon sun.

This artistic and design-forward family approached us at the beginning of the pandemic with a design prompt to blend their love of midcentury modern design with their Caribbean roots. With her parents originating from Trinidad & Tobago and his parents from Jamaica, they wanted their home to be an authentic representation of their heritage, with a midcentury modern twist. We found inspiration from a colorful Trinidad & Tobago tourism poster that they already owned and carried the tropical colors throughout the house — rich blues in the main bathroom, deep greens and oranges in the powder bathroom, mustard yellow in the dining room and guest bathroom, and sage green in the kitchen. This project was featured on Dwell in January 2022.

Its all about family...This east side backyard transformation began with a recommendation from our previous clients. This design build plan began with the family in mind! A place to have picnics, learn about flowers, enjoy family pets, vegetable gardening, bird watching and an outdoor living space for friends and family to get together for those special everyday occasions! Mission accomplished, phase 1.

Succulent flowers are humming bird magnets. This vast hillside in San Anselmo, Northern California, has evolved over the years and is the personal sanctuary of Landscape Designer Eileen Kelly, owner of Dig Your Garden Landscape Design. This sustainable garden also serves as her "living laboratory" where Eileen observes and learns from the habits and growth of her extensive selection of plants. They include hundreds of varieties of low-water plants ranging from California natives to others from South Africa and Australia, and a few exotics from Hawaii and other regions. Succulents have always been one of Eileen's favorites and they co-mingle beautifully throughout the landscape. The gardens offer biodiversity and attract many species of birds along with bees and butterflies. Design and Photos: © Eileen Kelly, Dig Your Garden Landscape Design http://www.digyourgarden.com
