The works involved the complete refurbishment of a 1920's red brick and hanging tile detached house within a conservation area in Hampstead. The house had been in single occupation for many years, and had been extended in a 70's style not in keeping with either our clients new functional requirements or the orginal logic of the house. The client sought to subtly mix of the aesthetic of the orginal Arts and Crafts style with their passion for 1930/40's French deco and the practicality of a modern home. The existing footprint at ground floor but the more shoddy extensions were shorn and the orginal walls were tweaked to provide a better flow and circulation. The later and less durable alterations in the upper floors were completely removed as well as a dilapidated wooden pool house and crazy paving landscape of a similar era to the internal alterations were completely remodeled. The project exemplifies our approach of undertaking all aspects of the design, including the designed aspect of the design from the table linen to the architectural design and the landscape work.

With a busy young family and two large dogs, the design brief for this Wynnum kitchen was for a contemporary look, durable finishes, increased storage & functionality and lots of drawers. Finishes include Polytec Ultraglaze doors in "superior white" and "royal oyster", Quantum Quartz benchtops in "carbon matt" and "white Calacatta" porcelain panels on the splash-backs. All cabinets incorporate Blumotion drawers and Blum "tip-on" doors. The double pantry also features internal soft-close drawers. Built-in appliances include Bosch pyrolytic under bench oven and gas on glass cooktop, AEG fully integrated dishwasher and integrated rangehood, Baumatic integrated microwave, sink and tap which all compliment the modern seamless look. NYC designer Megan Pflug and her husband J. Penry purchased a 1962 mid-century lodge in Greenville, New York and revived the tired property to become the Woodhouse Lodge. Threading through it all are natural materials reflective of the environment, starting with the soapstone countertops quarried in Virginia and then fabricated on site with nothing more than a steel straight edge, a measuring tape, a wet saw and a few other basic tools. "In decorating the space, we were really interested in working with a lot of local vendors and makers," Pflug said. "I thought it was really cool that we were able to source soapstone from the east coast. I also think that regional materials are often the most appropriate choice. If I was in Santa Fe, maybe soapstone wouldn't make the most sense architecturally." Like Pflug, Hudson Valley based fabricator Anson R. Tollefson, of A.R.T. Restoration and Remodeling, has a background in art. Working with just two slabs of Alberene Soapstone, Tollefson, crafted the countertops, backsplash, shelving and supports. A job he describes as, “Like a very heavy puzzle.” Photo: Genevieve Garruppo

Reimagined as a quiet retreat on a mixed-use Mission block, this former munitions depot was transformed into a single-family residence by reworking existing forms. A bunker-like concrete structure was cut in half to form a covered patio that opens onto a new central courtyard. The residence behind was remodeled around a large central kitchen, with a combination skylight/hatch providing ample light and roof access. The multiple structures are tied together by untreated cedar siding, intended to gradually fade to grey to match the existing concrete and corrugated steel.
