A person’s home is the place where their personality can flourish. In this client’s case, it was their love for their native homeland of Kenya, Africa. One of the main challenges with these space was to remain within the client’s budget. It was important to give this home lots of character, so hiring a faux finish artist to hand-paint the walls in an African inspired pattern for powder room to emphasizing their existing pieces was the perfect solution to staying within their budget needs. Each room was carefully planned to showcase their African heritage in each aspect of the home. The main features included deep wood tones paired with light walls, and dark finishes. A hint of gold was used throughout the house, to complement the spaces and giving the space a bit of a softer feel.

They came to us requesting a more spa like experience and a designer’s eye to create a more refined space. A large steam shower, bench and rain head replaced a dated corner bathtub. In addition, we added heated floors for those cool Chicago months and several storage niches and built-in cabinets to keep extra towels and toiletries out of sight. The use of circles in the tile, cabinetry and new window in the shower give this primary bath the character it was lacking, while lowering and modifying the unevenly vaulted ceiling created symmetry in the space. The end result is a large luxurious spa shower, more storage space and improvements to the overall comfort of the room. A nice upgrade from the existing builder grade space! The primary bathroom features a vintage clawfoot tub that was re-glazed to it's former glory. An oversized niche is very convenient a romantic night with wine and candles. Oversized porcelain tile was used instead of marble for easy maintenance. A brass wall mounted faucet has an additional hand-held feature for hair washing and tub clean-up. The over-sizes shower is surrounded with a door-less glass enclosure.

Talk about a powder room with personality! The wainscot pops under a splash of blue wallpaper thanks to interlocking Chaine Homme Tile in melon pink Desert Bloom topped off with matching 1x6 Flat Liner Trim, while an 8” Hexagon Tile Floor in White Wash balances out the bright walls. The vanity is a custom assemblage of maple bowling alley wood, a hairpin leg stand, a low profile sink, and plumbing parts. It was the first item I installed over the course of a three and a half year trek. Selling the glass one paid for all the parts of the new one.

Reuse of homeowners furniture piece (painted white), with onyx top and self rimming sink. New tub and wainscoting, custom built-in storage above the tub. Custom mirror made for existing mirror frame that was cut down to fit the existing bathroom space.
