Reno's Circular Whirlwind
Reno, Nevada
Hain Enterprises
Late in 2013 in the pastoral horse country just west of Reno, Nevada, a homeowner challenged his contractor to design a patio environment incorporating as many circles as possible that would flow seamlessly from one to another and create a unique visual experience for family and guests. The contractor took up the challenge. He and his crews designed and installed one-of-a-kind patios, walls and planting areas, utilizing concrete paver circle kits. The kits spin off one another and linked two separate patio areas and adjacent walkways, without interrupting the flow of each circle. One of many design challenges of this project was deciding how to incorporate the existing drains into the design. The solution: use the drain grates as centers for the circles. Another challenge was determining how to continue the arc of the varying size circles onto and through the connecting pathways. To accomplish this, the contractor installed only curvilinear courses of pavers that appear to run off the pathways and rejoin later. In total, the contractor used 14 paver circle kits and approximately 3,600 square feet of pavement. Included in this project were freestanding seat walls and accent planting areas, creating the outdoor entertainment environment the customer envisioned.

A celebrated actor couple’s relaxing Hudson Valley retreat stands at the highpoint of a spectacular east-facing slope. The house boasts sweeping views of the Berkshires and surrounding hills and fields. Nestled amongst 14 acres of managed meadows and mature, mixed woodland, the garden’s rustic hardscaping, sitting walls, steps and paths, spirals, terracing and benches are constructed from rough hewn slabs of local New York fieldstone and granite reclaimed from the site excavation. Durable swaths of deer resistant native plants explode with color throughout the season. Simple, yet thoughtful detailing sets the tone for a relaxing and inspiring atmosphere, where pollinators can thrive and creative minds can be set free.

After--a much more inviting walk up to the front door! Fig vine, Ficus pumila, was planted to soften the stark wall, while dwarf mock orange, Pittosporum tobira 'Wheeler's Dwarf,' softens the edge of the linear walkway. Dietes vegeta on the shadier side mirrors the vertical Muhlenbergia 'Regal Mist' grasses on the sunnier side. Bougainvillea will frame the entry in colorful bloom given a few seasons.

Outdoor Lighting Perspectives of Minneapolis
Softly glowing in the evening light, this stunning obelisk is actually standing in four feet of snow! Regardless of the season in Minneapolis, or the snow level, you can have and enjoy beautiful outdoor lighting in your landscape. Year-round, attraction lighting becomes a dual complimenting asset in either your front or back yard. You can see here, how the small trees branches are also highlighted. When this tree is leafed out, it will be a gorgeous interplay of color, shadow, and soft movement.

This is an eclectic garden, mixing materials: brick, stone, decomposed granite, river rock, containers, railroad ties, artwork, statues, and of course an assortment of plants! We've created a yen/yang balance with the large empty dg area, surrounded by the business of the different plants and accessories...a fine place to meditate!
