The central part of the first floor is one grand rectangular room - with entry, living and dining areas distinguished through the use of columns, beams and different ceiling heights. Note the juxtaposition of the owner's contemporary art with the classical detailing and antique furniture. Photo: Scott Benedict, Practically Studio

A generic condominium lacking character was transformed into a warm, welcoming home through the use of custom designed millwork and furniture. The double height space in the living area is accentuated with an oversized bookcase in French walnut, and a dramatic chandelier. The softness of a new rug in wool and silk provides contrast to the soaring space. A new opening was inserted in the interior of the upper floor to visually combine the two apartment levels. A credenza of solid French walnut provides a focal point adjacent to the dining room. Photo by Ofer Wolberger

In this remarkable architecturally designed home, the owners were craving a drastic change from the neutral decor they had been living with for 15 years. The goal was to infuse a lot of intense color while incorporating, and eloquently displaying, a fabulous art collection acquired on their many travels.

The custom fireplace in this room is the real showstopper. We were able to marry a contemporary gas fireplace insert with an antique coal fireplace cover to give this fireplace function and charm. We designed a custom fireplace surround to coordinate with the woodwork in the dining room and utilized a variety of handmade tile sizes and finishes to create a fireplace that feels like it has always been a part of this home. To give this room a bit more natural light we also added a custom window with a lovely diamond pattern.
