Traditional in design but there is nothing traditional about this office. Tons of natural light pours in from the windows and complements that gorgeous hardwood storage and brings out the little pops of color strategically placed on the shelves. The client came with the huge antique desk that had been passed down form generation to generation and we just had to use it! A great starting point of course but the room needed a little bit of umpiring up with a colorful rug and the divided mirror to make the room feel larger. Who doesn't love the rich colors of the molding too?!

These clients spend most of their time between their kitchen and living room where they enjoy their fireplace. The original kitchen was not only cut off from the living room but was tight and not functional for clients that enjoy cooking and entertaining. They wanted to open the floor plan and update the finishes throughout; starting with the front door! The fireplace in the living room was the first thing you saw when you walked into the house. The old fireplace had a tall curved brick hearth with a simple boring wood mantel. We modernized the fireplace by surrounding it with tile and removing the tall hearth. The same Uliano Gray Vicostone Quartz from the kitchen island now topped the lowered hearth. There were three different ceiling heights in the kitchen, to include some decorative wood ceiling panels and two pop ups that were removed and leveled out when the wall was removed between the kitchen and living room. The new large spacious island with a sink now sits where that wall once was. The original pantry was in the hallway adjacent to the kitchen, so it was not convenient at all. Space was taken from what used to be the formal dining for a new conveniently located pantry. The original formal dining was transformed into an office, which is more functional space for these clients. The coat closet that was once accessible from the entry way was closed off becoming a closet for the guest bedroom. We removed the chair rail and picture frame molding from the entry way and once the new front door was hung, the entry way was now completely transformed, to match the new kitchen and living area! Multi-purpose room designed to have everything AND the kitchen sink! Space planned very carefully to include all of the client's needs. This bonus room was previously used primarily for laundry and storage. A custom walnut desk with beautiful quartz countertops was designed to maximize leg room and function. Frosted glass cabinet doors hide office supplies. A huge 6 foot barn door was custom designed to hide the washer and dryer when not in use. Door by Rustica Hardware. White Shaker cabinetry for storage and a beautiful white fireclay sink with a classic chrome bridge faucet finishes off the laundry side. How much office storage do I need?

To ensure your home office or study room isn’t buried under a deluge of paperwork, books and supplies, incorporate plenty of shelves, cabinets and drawers. Floating or built-in shelves with cubbies can stock books and magazine holders; or for a more traditional look, make room for a large bookcase that fits in with the decor of your home. Invest in a filing cabinet to store paperwork, and opt for a lockable filing cabinet if you have sensitive documents. A tray organiser can store incoming mail and will help prioritise bills. The type of desk you choose is also key to keeping things organised. Look for desks with deep drawers and plenty of surface space, and add tray organisers to the drawers to keep track of staples like pens, pencils, highlighters and sticky tape. If you want a streamlined look, find a way to conceal any computer cables or wires, too. One solution is to install a false back on your desk, if it doesn’t already have one.

How do I choose an office desk and chair?

If you spend long hours hunched over your work desk at home, invest in ergonomic office chairs with wheels for better back health and comfort. Consider optimal lumbar support with flexibility in adjusting handles and back angle. Most rolling office chairs come upholstered, typically in leather, but that’s no reason why you can’t have one custom-made to suit your home decor. When picking out your work desk, be sure to consider its overall function. If you work from home and hold meetings, pick an oversized, sturdy desk that is double-sided (can be accessed from both sides). You’ll want it to look professional, so opt for dark timbers over high-shine finishes. It’s also a good idea to create a separate study desk for the kids, so homework doesn’t go missing among your files. If your home office is for the whole family a two-person desk or built-in long work bench are more suitable. Where space is tight, look for a retractable computer desk, or utilise an awkward corner with a corner desk.

What home office decor will encourage productivity?

Use your walls for to-do lists: hang a pegboard and paint it in your favourite colour or be adventurous with chalkboard paint and whiteboard panels. Bulletin boards that keep the whole family in order are an extra feature that always come in handy. Use your stationery and office accessories – think pencil cups, paper trays and magazine holders – to add colour and pattern, and desk lamps, clocks, maps and calendars to personalise the space.
