Imagine stepping back in time, say the mid 1950s, and visiting a remote, off-the-grid summer cabin on quiet mountain lake. The kitchen would have propane appliances and lighting, the cabinets would be the classic white metal kind so popular in the day and the counter tops would be durable, easy to maintain stainless steel. Well, that kitchen was reproduced by Zobel & Co Kitchens. While vintage metal cabinets are hard to find we were able to re-purpose a small collection of cabinets removed from a loft and design new cabinets to match the vintage ones. This off-the-grid kitchen has classic features like a refurbished stove and antique kitchen accessories. The two-sided island with drawers that operate from both sides has a nice wood top that add functions and character to the kitchen, and is complimented by a simple iron pot rack for easy access to pots and pans.

The villa kitchen provides the perfect setting. The large window over the sink looks out to a deck dining area. Stainless steel countertops are easy to care for. Warm and cool are combined by setting off the stainless steel faced cabinetry with a deep red wall, wood accents and red sisal rug. Open shelves for often-used dishware allow for convenience as well as a sense of rhythm and repetition, one of Jane's favorite motifs. The result is a kitchen that imbues the food -- and the kitchen conversation -- with lively energy.

Photovoltaic panels generate all the home’s electricity, sending surplus energy back to the grid. All the home’s systems—hot water, HVAC, and radiant heating—are integrated, electric-based, and powered by the PV panels on the roof. The only use of natural gas is at the cooking range, which draws from a 50-gallon propane tank. With the exception of the propane tank, the home is net-zero in terms of its energy consumption. A coastal home loses its dark Tuscan roots in favor of a modern palette of blue and white. Wood floors anchor the living space, with white textured laminate cabinetry surrounds the space. A pop of bright blue frames in a stainless steel countertop around the professional cooktop and range hood. A hidden bar joins the kitchen and living space.
