A residence for a retired couple high in the Belmont hills overlooking the San Francisco Bay. The large kitchen, breakfast area and outdoor deck all open to the expansive views. White walls are balanced with sea foam green slate and granite slabs and accented with quarter sawn anegre cabinets. Upper clerestory windows bring natural light deep into the kitchen and the freestanding fireplace mass, finished with pigmented cement plaster, creates a permeable divider. A narrow slit skylight allows natural light to wash over recessed mirrors in the master bathroom, flooding the room with brightness.

A blend of transitional design meets French Country architecture. The kitchen is a blend pops of teal along the double islands that pair with aged ceramic backsplash, hardwood and golden pendants.
Mixes new with old-world design.

One of the crowning jewels of this kitchen is a mirrored refrigerator armoire, which houses two 30 inch wide subzero refrigerators. Overall, the mirrors reflect light and add extra sparkle into the space and custom lead caming gives an antique aesthetic.
Mark Brand Architecture
Our design for the façade of this house contains many references to the work of noted Bay Area architect Bernard Maybeck. The concrete exterior panels, aluminum windows designed to echo industrial steel sash, redwood log supporting the third floor breakfast deck, curving trellises and concrete fascia panels all reference Maybeck’s work. However, the overall design is quite original in its combinations of forms, eclectic references and reinterpreting of motifs. The use of steel detailing in the trellis’ rolled c-channels, the railings and the strut supporting the redwood log bring these motifs gently into the 21st Century. The house was intended to respect its immediate surroundings while also providing an opportunity to experiment with new materials and unconventional applications of common materials, much as Maybeck did during his own time.

Gorgeous kitchen upgrade with new luxury vinyl plank flooring throughout, new appliances, tile backsplash, custom finish, painted & glazed doors & drawers, hardware, and recessed lighting. We kept the original cabinet boxes, with exception of the microwave & oven cabinet, & an addition to the island.
