TELFORD+BROWN STUDIO ARCHITECTURE
Positioned on a bluff this house looks out to the Columbia Gorge National Scenic Area and to Mount Hood beyond. It provides a year-round gathering place for a mid-west couple, their dispersed families and friends.
Attention was given to views and balancing openness and privacy. Common spaces are generous and allow for the interactions of multiple groups. These areas take in the long, dramatic views and open to exterior porches and terraces. Bedrooms are intimate but are open to natural light and ventilation.
The materials are basic: salvaged barn timber from the early 1900’s, stucco on Rastra Block, stone fireplace & garden walls and concrete counter tops & radiant concrete floors. Generous porches are open to the breeze and provide protection from rain and summer heat.

In a corner of the yard sits fire pit with a circular stone bench which is built from the excavated concrete of the original deck. The bench and plant beds are all gently curving to soften the straight angles of the pool and improve the flow of the yard. The perimeter wall is finished in a custom blend of moss green Santa Barbara stucco. Square cutouts soften the wall and a custom redwood pergola is planted with grape vines.

This tiered patio provides multiple options to enjoy your outdoor space. The natural gas fire pit with a built in seat wall is sure to be a popular gathering place.

This backyard escape had an existing natural flagstone patio, under cover of a cedar pergola. We perfectly matched the existing flagstone, and seamlessly extended the patio to accommodate a new outdoor fireplace and better use of the space overall. The extension begins at the pergola’s support post – with no line of demarcation or evidence of new versus existing materials!

At this NE Columbia, SC home, we custom designed and built an outdoor living combination space that included a patio, retaining wall and fire pit along with a screened porch and deck.

As for finishing touches, we added a trellis wall for privacy beside the smoker and built a “more private” privacy wall beside the hot tub and swim spa. Swim spa? Yes! The homeowners moved to Dripping Springs from a home with a much larger lot that included an inground pool. They love this home and its location in the Texas Hill Country so much they were willing to trade their old pool for a swim spa.

House of a Different Color
Backyard residential patio space with daybed, dining table, small bistro table, and extra seating.
Replaced original dining table, but kept existing dining chairs, which were in good condition, and refreshed them with new paint. Relocated existing glider loveseats to new fire pit area and added a daybed and bright colored rug where loveseats had been. Added two outdoor ceiling fans- one over the dining table and one over the daybed. Large succulent "coffee table" was custom made for this project, as was the shelving unit for garden tools and extra pots and supplies. Added 15 colorful outdoor lanterns and bistro lights to the outside edge of the patio cover for lighting at night and an eclectic atmosphere all day.
