This 1960’s home underwent a striking transformation--remodeling the kitchen, hall bathroom and laundry room. These homeowners dreamed of an open floor plan that would unite the kitchen and adjacent living areas. To accomplish this, we removed an imposing chimney that separated the kitchen from the living room. Additionally, we eliminated a weight-bearing wall that was between the kitchen and dining room. What a change! The spaces that formerly felt dark and confined are now bright and connected, comfortably accommodating larger gatherings. When considering the specifics of design, we wanted to stay true to the home’s mid-century roots, while updating it with today’s style elements. Embracing the mid-century aspects, we played off some of the existing features of the home by mirroring them in the spaces we redesigned. To introduce today’s style, we thoughtfully incorporated the finishes and touches that would aptly reflect that component. The resulting design is beautifully juxtaposed by the homeowners’ treasured antique furniture pieces. In the kitchen, we enhanced the open and airy feel by choosing a light greige color for the inset cabinetry paired with a tonal light-colored, blue-veined quartz for the countertops. These tones are perfectly complemented by the gold finishes of the cabinet hardware, faucets, and mid-century modern pendants. To maximize the storage potential of this kitchen, we customized the cabinetry with a convenient utensil organizer and a blind corner “cloud” pullout. A full height zellige-style tile backsplash with custom floating shelves makes for an impressive statement wall. With family get togethers in mind, we added an additional bar/prep sink and a spacious breakfast nook with a good deal of bench storage. A vertically-slatted wood half-wall separates the kitchen and breakfast nook, replicating the original mid-century wall detail at the entry. Between the living room and kitchen, we designed a semi-open bar-height peninsula, accenting the bar front with a vertical shiplap kickplate in a bold blue. Carrying this color statement through the kitchen, the homeowner selected a “Navy Steel” Samsung Bespoke refrigerator and an AGA Mercury range, in “Blueberry.” These colors are also echoed in the multi-tonal quartz. In the hall bathroom, we were aiming for the bright ambiance we’d achieved in the living areas. The penny round tile flooring and full height zellige-look tile combine for a classy, elevated look. In keeping with the kitchen, we installed similar gold fixtures and inset cabinetry and the same beautiful quartz countertop. The vanity towers provide these happy homeowners with additional room to store all their necessities. Through the design process, we were able to gain square footage in the laundry room which allowed for the extra cabinet space the homeowners were looking for. Of course, a remodel is never complete without conveniences for the pets. The kitty’s litter box is neatly tucked in the cabinet behind a custom cat-cutout--a cute and tidy idea! Keyes Road is a two-storey, semi-detached red brick house dating to around 1890-1910. The focus of our work was on the ground floor where we were asked to improve the layout and use of the main living areas of the house, for an active family of four. Important to the design was to maximise the quality and amount of light as well as connection to the garden and flow to the rest of the house. Our proposal introduces three single storey extensions, comprising a central, large space that extends the main outrigger of the house. To each side are smaller volumes, affording a full width kitchen. While defining a series of discrete volumes, it was important for us to ensure that the kitchen, living, family and dining rooms that are interconnecting and continuous. The result is a big space punctuated by a series of differently sized arches, defining spaces to ensure their intimacy. It was important for our client to have a sense of warmth and comfort - perhaps not dissimilar to the qualities of a hotel lobby. The colour scheme of the rooms are warm white painted plaster, natural wood flooring with black, bronze and brass accents. Indirect and carefully placed light fittings pulls together the atmosphere of the rooms - particularly in the evenings. Externally, we felt it important to differentiate the extensions from the main house by using a dark, charcoal grey brick. This sets up a contrasting yet complimentary relationship to the rich red coloured brick house. The facets of the brick play with light and depth as do the graduated brick arches. During the design process, we grappled with floor levels, the direction of sunlight, and care to not encroach on the neighbouring properties. As the house is in a conservation area, we worked closely with our trusted planning advisor. Throughout, we pursued a sensitive design strategy, using pitched roofs, matching materials and careful detailing. Internally, many of the original details are intact. This has enabled us to create an eclectic ensemble of elements, colours and materials varying in age and period.

This beautiful kitchen embodies all the traditionalism of shaker design with some classic embellishments, such as aperture beading attached to the face frames and bold contrasts of colour between timeless oak and pelt purple with a neutral grey background. The simplicity and minimalist appeal continues with stylish pewter handles and glazed panels on the upper cabinets, to reflect light and illuminate the cabinets' feature piece contents and beautiful oak interior.

Searle & TaylorSearle & Taylor
This kitchen was designed by Darren Taylor, whose specialism as a skilled cabinetmaker combines with his passion for incorporating advanced technological aspects to the most traditional kitchen spaces - this sums up the Searle & Taylor Signature Bespoke offer. He designed a Shaker-style kitchen with a beaded frame, which was handpainted in two separate colours by the Little Greene Paint Company: Slaked Lime for the wall-mounted cabinetry and French Grey for the kitchen island and the freestanding dressers, the latter colour matching the walls. The wall-mounted cabinetry includes a concealed fridge freezer next to two overhead cupboards that are bisected by a decorative shelf. Undercounter dovetailed drawers with shell handles bisect the China Blue AGA at the centre of the cooking space (purchased separately). This AGA heats the house and is switched off during the summer months, so a Neff domino two-zone induction hob is installed to the left of it for essential surface cooking needs. White brick tiles are featured providing a quality splashback and they reflect the light from the line of Georgian floor to ceiling windows in the room. An extractor was not required because of the AGA. The island features both undercounter cupboards and dovetail drawers for vital storage together with two integrated dishwashers. Sensa Granite worktops are featured throughout and the piece above the island is extended at one side, while cabinetry is reduced in width in order to accommodate stools facing the kitchen for informal socialising. The island is also used as the food preparation space and wet area with an undermount Kohler sink and taps by Perrin and Rowe and a Quooker Boiling Water Tap installed within. Situated each side of the Georgian fireplace are two freestanding dressers, one to accommodate logs for a wood-burning stove (not pictured) with stylish glass fronts in the upper section to store decorative glassware. The other matching dresser had electrical supplies installed in the wall behind it as it includes a Neff combination microwave oven, also for use when the AGA is switched off together with shelving for further pieces of crockery. It features bi-folding doors that open out when required and are closed at all other times, thus maintaining the clean lines of the room. The flooring is large format limestone tiles. (not supplied by Searle & Taylor) An addition suggested and designed by Darren Taylor was a special matching reduced depth cabinet that sits between the windows – this opens at the top to reveal a pop-up TV which is activated by remote control.

TThe Hartford collection is an inspired modern update on the classic Shaker style kitchen. Designed with simplicity in mind, the kitchens in this range have a universal appeal that never fails to delight. Each kitchen is beautifully proportioned, with an unerring focus on scale that ensures the final result is flawless. The L shaped kitchen has a main run of cabinets along the back wall with an abundance of practical storage and integrated appliances on the other. Floor-to-ceiling cabinets utilise every inch of space, making the kitchen feel grand. With busy lives it’s often hard to control everyday clutter, keeping all belongings well organised. Cleverly concealed pantry style storage creates much-needed space for essential food items and utensils, whilst an adjoining utility room provides a separate space for cleaning goods, dirty boots and washing.
