This small garage entry functions as the mudroom as well as the laundry room. The space once featured the swing of the garage entry door, as well as the swing of the door that connects it to the foyer hall. We replaced the hallway entry door with a barn door, allowing us to have easier access to cabinets. We also incorporated a stackable washer & dryer to open up counter space and more cabinet storage. We created a mudroom on the opposite side of the laundry area with a small bench, coat hooks and a mix of adjustable shelving and closed storage. Photos by Spacecrafting Photography

This compact laundry/walk in pantry packs a lot in a small space. By stacking the new front loading washer and dryer on a platform, doing laundry just got a lot more ergonomic not to mention the space afforded for folding and storage! Photo by A Kitchen That Works LLC

This River Cottage needed a laundry area in a small space. Custom designed cabinets can be available for any use. This white stackable washer and dryer, sits in a hallway going unnoticed when the doors are shut. Guests only see a very handsome closet. When you open the custom cabinetry you will be surprised at what you find. This renovation not only included the appliances but they went a step further adding a pull out shelf for your laundry use. This is a unique design idea for any small laundry space.

For this mudroom remodel the homeowners came in to Dillman & Upton frustrated with their current, small and very tight, laundry room. They were in need of more space and functional storage and asked if I could help them out. Once at the job site I found that adjacent to the the current laundry room was an inefficient walk in closet. After discussing their options we decided to remove the wall between the two rooms and create a full mudroom with ample storage and plenty of room to comfortably manage the laundry. This laundry is a space savers dream! Machines stacked nicely with enough room to store whatever you need above (like that washing basket that just doesn't really GO anywhere). Fitted neatly is the laundry trough with a simple tap. The black tiles really do make the space it's own. Who said laundries had to be boring?

Stacking washer and dryers are great for smaller spaces and allow for other options to be added to the laundry like a built-in ironing board and central vac hose closet.

Hood House is a playful protector that respects the heritage character of Carlton North whilst celebrating purposeful change. It is a luxurious yet compact and hyper-functional home defined by an exploration of contrast: it is ornamental and restrained, subdued and lively, stately and casual, compartmental and open. For us, it is also a project with an unusual history. This dual-natured renovation evolved through the ownership of two separate clients. Originally intended to accommodate the needs of a young family of four, we shifted gears at the eleventh hour and adapted a thoroughly resolved design solution to the needs of only two. From a young, nuclear family to a blended adult one, our design solution was put to a test of flexibility. The result is a subtle renovation almost invisible from the street yet dramatic in its expressive qualities. An oblique view from the northwest reveals the playful zigzag of the new roof, the rippling metal hood. This is a form-making exercise that connects old to new as well as establishing spatial drama in what might otherwise have been utilitarian rooms upstairs. A simple palette of Australian hardwood timbers and white surfaces are complimented by tactile splashes of brass and rich moments of colour that reveal themselves from behind closed doors. Our internal joke is that Hood House is like Lazarus, risen from the ashes. We’re grateful that almost six years of hard work have culminated in this beautiful, protective and playful house, and so pleased that Glenda and Alistair get to call it home.
