NORDIC BUILDERS - MODERN TIMBERFRAME DESIGN BUILD
I was pretty happy when I saw these black windows going in. Just cleans up the look so much. I used to be a big fan of white windows and years of my wife mocking me and telling me black was the only way to go finally must have sunk in. A ton of my design preferences have come from her over the years. I think we have combined both of our favorites into one. It's been a long road with a LOT of changing ideas to get to this point of our design methods. Massive change and then now just a little changing and tweaking. Seems like always veering toward more modern lines and minimalism and simplicity while getting more rustic at the same time. My dad would have been proud. He always called himself a chainsaw carpenter. His style was a little more rustic than the current NB palette but its weird how we keep moving more in that direction.

The double-height living room lets plenty of light in and provides an ample and comfortable space to relax and entertain guests.

Nested in the beautiful Cotswolds, this converted barn was in need of a redesign and modernisation to maintain its country style yet bring a contemporary twist. We specified a new mezzanine, complete with a glass and steel balustrade. We kept the deco traditional with a neutral scheme to complement the sand colour of the stones.

This is an Appalachian-style mountain chalet in Virginia with a hybrid timber framed roof. The beams are Select & Btr. Douglas Fir, and the roof is a ridge and rafter timber roof with primary purlins (not pictured). The fireplace is a woodstove insert, and the flue is wrapped in copper. You always wanted a 24' tall Christmas tree, right?

This Northwood’s retreat was designed and built in a sustainable process to minimize site disturbance. The primary structural beams of the main cabin are hemlock that were logged on site and cut in Henry Ford’s original mill. Most of the house is paneled in indigenous northern white cedar with hemlock ceilings and cabinets of red and white pine. The sub-floors are also made of hemlock. The home is timber framed, doweled, and jointed.
There is a high-efficiency propane generator and battery storage system that provides ample electric power. The home has been designed to take advantage of passive solar radiation and can be heated by the radiant bio fuel heating system. Walls and roof are super insulated and well vented to protect against moisture buildup. Natural ventilation is aided by the thermal chimney design that keeps the home cool and fresh throughout the summer.
The property has been recorded a conservation easement written to forever preserve the singular beauty of the steep slopes, ponds, and ridge lines. It provides that the land may not be divided or the timber harvested in a commercial cut.

Creating an open space for entertaining in the garage apartment was a must for family visiting or guests renting the loft.
The custom railing on the stairs compliments other custom designed industrial style pieces throughout.
M.O.Daby Design
Conceived more similar to a loft type space rather than a traditional single family home, the homeowner was seeking to challenge a normal arrangement of rooms in favor of spaces that are dynamic in all 3 dimensions, interact with the yard, and capture the movement of light and air.
As an artist that explores the beauty of natural objects and scenes, she tasked us with creating a building that was not precious - one that explores the essence of its raw building materials and is not afraid of expressing them as finished.
We designed opportunities for kinetic fixtures, many built by the homeowner, to allow flexibility and movement.
The result is a building that compliments the casual artistic lifestyle of the occupant as part home, part work space, part gallery. The spaces are interactive, contemplative, and fun.
More details to come.

There is a white sliding barn door to the loft over the open-floor plan of a living room. The Blencko lamp, is produced by the historic glass manufacturer from the early 50s by the same name. Blencko designs are handblown shapes like this cobalt blue carafe shape. The orange-red sofa is contrasted nicely against the yellow wall and blue accents of the elephant painting and Asian porcelain floor table. Loft Farmhouse, San Juan Island, Washington. We were able to keep the traditional roots of this cabin while also offering it a major update. By accentuating its untraditional floor plan with a mix of modern furnishings, we increased the home's functionality and created an exciting but trendy aesthetic. A back-to-back sofa arrangement used the space better, and custom wool rugs are durable and beautiful. It’s a traditional design that looks decades younger.
