An existing screen porch area that got dirty, cold and windy in winter or too hot in summer. They could not enjoy the backyard and wanted a space in which they could feel more outdoors. We added a Four Seasons Sunrooms System 230 Aluminum walls under system to give a feeling of all glass that could convert to screens in seconds because all the windows are operable or removable in summer. This blended a technically modern sunroom in with the existing architecture and complimented their home.

Set within open countryside, this recently completed barn conversion demonstrates the charm and potential many modern agricultural buildings offer when converted to residential use. Like many smaller farms this building was located on a holding which has dramatically reduced its farming operation over the past 20 years, which in this instance has led to a number of agricultural buildings being surplus to requirements. We were appointed by the owner to help with re-purposing these buildings, and in this instance, it was considered that this building would be best used as a new residential building. The permitted development right to change the use of an agricultural building into a dwelling has been with us for some time now and with it the concept of changing rural, redundant barns into dwellings. This is a building which like so many, had it not been allowed to change use to a dwelling would have sat in the landscape largely redundant except for some very light agricultural storage use. The intention with this conversion was to retain the agricultural character of the building whilst providing a modern attractive home. Here we have used corrugated sheet metal to clad the building, a material which is common to modern agricultural buildings and inserted contemporary, glazed openings which accentuate the form the of the original building. The Class Q permitted development rights and Local Plan policies allow us to bring back into use our redundant agricultural buildings to provide modern attractive home which celebrate the changing nature of our countryside. They also go some way to addressing the nationwide push to build more homes, particularly in rural areas in a way that is more sustainable and architecturally provides an interesting design challenge.

This addition opens up to an established back garden in the leafy suburb of Ivanhoe. Seven metre wide doors slide away and broad timber steps descend into the garden. A massive but finely detailed facade screen modulates northern sunlight in the main living area. The algorithmic pattern of the facade screen was inspired by foliage and textile patterns.

設計＆施工　(株)イン＆エムスクエア福岡市の都心部近めのエリアで、やや小高い丘の上にある住宅地。中庭を介して玄関にアプローチする家です。リビングに面する中庭では小さなお子様も内と外を自由に行き交える内なる外部空間です。さらにシンボルツリーを眺めながら季節を楽しむことができます。道路面には桜の木々がたくさんあり、春にはリビングの窓いっぱいに咲き誇る桜を見ることができます。ほとんどの部屋が中庭を向いており、１階の趣味室、２階の趣味室からも中庭のシンボルツリーを眺めることができます。２階にある洗面室は南向きなので明るく、さらに5帖ほどの広さなので、洗濯物も干しっぱなしにでき機能的。リビング・ダイニングには造り付の作業台や、パソコンコーナー、TV台があるのでスッキリと使用することができます。床はタモ材で北欧家具などに馴染む造りとなっています。洗面台も造り付で細やかにご要望を取り入れています。

This is the front of our shipping container house exterior at night with lights on under the huge verandah. Our container house was based on the style of a 'Queenslander style' home which we have always admired. We plan to add a huge deck around the house in the future.

The Barn

Architect: Michelle Penn, AIA This barn home is modeled after an existing Nebraska barn in Lancaster County. Heating is by passive solar design, supplemented by a geothermal radiant floor system. Cooling uses a whole house fan and a passive air flow system. The passive system is created with the cupola, windows, transoms and passive venting for cooling, rather than a forced air system. Because fresh water is not available from a well nor county water, water will be provided by rainwater harvesting. The water will be collected from a gutter system, go into a series of nine holding tanks and then go through a water filtration system to provide drinking water for the home. A greywater system will then recycle water from the sinks and showers to be reused in the toilets. Low-flow fixtures will be used throughout the home to conserve water. How do I decide on the exterior style of my home?

Your location, overall sense of style, budget and current home layout will dictate the style of your exterior. If you’re renovating a period home, the materials and features you use should reflect the date in which it was built, while a unique colour scheme could add contemporary flair. New homes may prefer to look to modern or contemporary designs with structural simplicity, whereas, if you live by the ocean, a beach-style design may better suit your locale. That’s not to say you can’t build a new home that has period influences. If you’re a traditionalist, you can borrow architectural details from the Art Deco period, for instance, or use finishes that reflect more of a Scandinavian style, too.

What exterior house colours and materials should I use?

Traditional homes typically use brick and timber building materials, while stone, board-formed concrete and metal cladding are popular contemporary options. Again, the materials you use will depend on your location and the statement you want to make. Your budget will also affect your choice. Vinyl siding is affordable and easy to install, while stone is more expensive but durable and low maintenance. If you’re not ready to renovate but want to update the exterior of your home, you can still paint it. Look to your neighbours when choosing exterior house colours. Consider the streetscape and what type of colours are already in use, firstly, so you don’t replicate next door’s shade; and secondly, so you don’t stand out like a sore thumb. If you’re renovating a period home, you could paint features or intricate details in a bold, standout hue. Front doors, garage doors and window trims also look great in eye-catching colours, even if the rest of the house’s facade is neutral.

How can I maximise my home’s street appeal?

To spice up your home’s architectural design, landscape the surrounding area with plants and pathways that accent the style of your home. If you just need a quick revamp, look at your cement and pavers – these can split and crack over time; and repairing or replacing them can do wonders for your street appeal, especially if it’s a large area like your driveway. Plants, garden paths or low walls can can also add structure to your front yard. Light up your home with sufficient outdoor lighting to make walking up to the front door easy at night. You could use bollard lights along your entry path, or replace tiny wall sconces with statement pendant lighting at the entrance or on your verandah. Decorative elements such as house numbers, mailboxes and doormats will also add character. And if you're looking to sell your house, it may be worth hiring a stylist to help make the most of your property.
