This project was a new construction laneway house designed by Alex Glegg and built by Eyco Building Group in Vancouver, British Columbia. It uses our Gendai cladding that shows off beautiful wood grain with a blackened look that creates a stunning contrast against their homes trim and its lighter interior. Cummings Architecture + InteriorsWhen Cummings Architects first met with the owners of this understated country farmhouse, the building’s layout and design was an incoherent jumble. The original bones of the building were almost unrecognizable. All of the original windows, doors, flooring, and trims – even the country kitchen – had been removed. Mathew and his team began a thorough design discovery process to find the design solution that would enable them to breathe life back into the old farmhouse in a way that acknowledged the building’s venerable history while also providing for a modern living by a growing family.
The redesign included the addition of a new eat-in kitchen, bedrooms, bathrooms, wrap around porch, and stone fireplaces. To begin the transforming restoration, the team designed a generous, twenty-four square foot kitchen addition with custom, farmers-style cabinetry and timber framing. The team walked the homeowners through each detail the cabinetry layout, materials, and finishes. Salvaged materials were used and authentic craftsmanship lent a sense of place and history to the fabric of the space.
The new master suite included a cathedral ceiling showcasing beautifully worn salvaged timbers. The team continued with the farm theme, using sliding barn doors to separate the custom-designed master bath and closet. The new second-floor hallway features a bold, red floor while new transoms in each bedroom let in plenty of light. A summer stair, detailed and crafted with authentic details, was added for additional access and charm.
Finally, a welcoming farmer’s porch wraps around the side entry, connecting to the rear yard via a gracefully engineered grade. This large outdoor space provides seating for large groups of people to visit and dine next to the beautiful outdoor landscape and the new exterior stone fireplace.
Though it had temporarily lost its identity, with the help of the team at Cummings Architects, this lovely farmhouse has regained not only its former charm but also a new life through beautifully integrated modern features designed for today’s family.

Flavin ArchitectsThis house is discreetly tucked into its wooded site in the Mad River Valley near the Sugarbush Resort in Vermont. The soaring roof lines complement the slope of the land and open up views though large windows to a meadow planted with native wildflowers. The house was built with natural materials of cedar shingles, fir beams and native stone walls. These materials are complemented with innovative touches including concrete floors, composite exterior wall panels and exposed steel beams. The home is passively heated by the sun, aided by triple pane windows and super-insulated walls.

ROAM ArchitectureUpdating a modern classic
These clients adore their home’s location, nestled within a 2-1/2 acre site largely wooded and abutting a creek and nature preserve. They contacted us with the intent of repairing some exterior and interior issues that were causing deterioration, and needed some assistance with the design and selection of new exterior materials which were in need of replacement.
Our new proposed exterior includes new natural wood siding, a stone base, and corrugated metal. New entry doors and new cable rails completed this exterior renovation.
Additionally, we assisted these clients resurrect an existing pool cabana structure and detached 2-car garage which had fallen into disrepair. The garage / cabana building was renovated in the same aesthetic as the main house.
G.B. Construction and Development, Inc.This charming ranch on the north fork of Long Island received a long overdo update. All the windows were replaced with more modern looking black framed Andersen casement windows. The front entry door and garage door compliment each other with the a column of horizontal windows. The Maibec siding really makes this house stand out while complimenting the natural surrounding. Finished with black gutters and leaders that compliment that offer function without taking away from the clean look of the new makeover. The front entry was given a streamlined entry with Timbertech decking and Viewrail railing. The rear deck, also Timbertech and Viewrail, include black lattice that finishes the rear deck with out detracting from the clean lines of this deck that spans the back of the house. The Viewrail provides the safety barrier needed without interfering with the amazing view of the water.
Atlas ArchitectsThe external facade of the existing building is refurbished and repainted to refresh the house appearance. A new carport is added in the same architectural style and blends in with the existing fabric.
Nakamoto ForestryProject Overview:
(via Architectural Record) The four-story house was designed to fit into the compact site on the footprint of a pre-existing house that was razed because it was structurally unsound. Architect Robert Gurney designed the four-bedroom, three-bathroom house to appear to be two-stories when viewed from the street. At the rear, facing the Potomac River, the steep grade allowed the architect to add two additional floors below the main house with minimum intrusion into the wooded site. The house is anchored by two concrete end walls, extending the four-story height. Wood framed walls clad in charred Shou Sugi Ban connect the two concrete walls on the street side of the house while the rear elevation, facing southwest, is largely glass.
