This solid brick masonry home is playful yet sophisticated. The traditional elements paired with modern touches create a unique yet recognizable house. A good example of how buildings can have infinite variations and character while also conforming to the archetypes that we recognize, find comfort in, and love. This home reimagines one of the oldest and most durables forms of building--structural brick masonry--in the modern context. With over 60,000 brick and foot-thick walls, this home will endure for centuries. Designed by Austin Tunnell.

Demonstrating the ultimate result in what can be done with some spare garden space; this new house develops on the design of the atypical British suburban home, blended with modernist design cues and playful sources of light. With a well-shaded garden backdrop, the challenge was to draw in as much daylight as possible whilst still maximising functionality of spaces. A playful and bright artist’s studio sits atop the house in the roof space, with the full height hallway and feature stair playing the main part. Bedrooms lead off from the landings in this full height space, providing a bright space to enter into at the start of the day.

A split level rear extension, clad with black zinc and cedar battens. Narrow frame sliding doors create a flush opening between inside and out, while a glazed corner window offers oblique views across the new terrace. Inside, the kitchen is set level with the main house, whilst the dining area is level with the garden, which creates a fabulous split level interior. This full remodel of a 3,200 sq ft home in San Francisco’s Forest Hills neighborhood worked within the home’s existing split level organization, but radically expanded the sense of openness and movement through the space. The jewel of the new top floor master suite is a minimalist bathroom surrounded by glass and filled with light. The most private space becomes the most prominent element from the street below.
