This stunning mid-century whole house remodel focuses on integrating great new fixtures, finishes and materials, while preserving the integrity of the original architectural aesthetic. This atomic age gem has many original architectural features like a custom copper fireplace hood, 12' stacking wood doors, and original woodwork that mesh seamlessly with the new design elements. Modern materials were chosen to fit the existing style of the home. Mahogany cabinets topped with Caesarstone countertops in Nougat and Raven were accented by 24×24-inch recycled porcelain tile with 1-inch glass penny round decos. Elsewhere in the kitchen, quality appliances were re-used. The oven was located in its original brick wall location. The microwave convection oven was located neatly under the island countertop. A tall pull out pantry was included to the left of the refrigerator. The island became the focus of the design. It provided the main food prep and cooking area, and helped direct traffic through the space, keeping guests comfortable on one side and cooks on the other. Large porcelain tiles clad the back side of the island to protect the surface from feet on stools and accent the surrounding surfaces.

The homeowners, who were expecting their first child, were interested in expanding their current 2 bedroom/2 bathroom house for their growing family. They also wanted to retain the character of their 1940 era inside-the-beltline home. Wood Wise designer Kathy Walker worked with the clients on several design options to meet their list of requirements. The final plan includes adding 2 bedrooms, 1 bathroom, a new dining room, and sunroom. The existing kitchen and dining rooms were remodeled to create a new central kitchen with a large walk-in pantry with sink. The custom aqua color of the kitchen cabinets recalls period turquoise kitchens. The exterior of the home was updated with paint and a new standing-seam metal roof to complete the remodel. Our clients made the bold decision to move to a smaller home than they were currently in to get closer in to the city – and they had a vision: a whole home remodel with a strong nod to mid-century design. We started by opening up the first floor to create a sense of space and built in a beautiful entertaining kitchen, complete with banquette, large island and waterfall countertops, remodeled the fireplace with rounded alcove book shelves, and lightened the flooring. The second floor was an unfinished blank slate. We went complete MCM on the bathroom including terrazzo tiles, and a floating walnut vanity, and we added skylights with black out remote shades, and a hidden bookshelf alcove for a sneak-away office in the front dormer. This home is simple, elegant and full of extraordinary design. We wish our homeowners a lifetime of happiness in their new space.
