St Saviour’s Church in Walton Place Knightsbridge originally designed by Belgrave Square architect George Basevi in 1838 was an interesting and challenging project. The brief to Will Caradoc-Hodgkins of leading London residential architect and interior designer 4D Studio was the conversion of a lofty church directly behind Harrods into a private residence whilst at the same time creating a smaller place of worship for parishioners. This included the unusual request to re-locate the organ and create a massive acoustic wall between the house and the church. However this proved to be small fry compared with the task of supporting the church on 40 hydraulic jacks to allow excavation for an underground swimming pool and games room. The a four storey home with basement swimming pool was owned for six years by Les Misérables and Miss Saigon writer Alain Boublil who sold it in 2009. It has since undergone a makeover to create one of the finest private homes in Knightsbridge and is on the market for £50 million

This backyard has a magnificent ocean/canyon/city view, another inspiration. She asked me to transform a drawing that was already designed by another designer. She wanted a more modern but zen ambiance where they can enjoy a spa to accommodate at least 8, a fire, lounge, wine and dine calmly with family and friends. However, they have two cute dogs so she asked me to minimize the vegetation accessible to the dogs, basically a more mineral (less vegetation more hard surfaces) not forgetting "Zen". So inspiring from the view, the house and the inside of her home this is the result. A large lava stone jacuzzi with water overflowing into a bed of white river stones (well it's more like a poolcuzzi) with a stainless steel cascade and planters behind the cascade. Along side to the jacuzzi, we built concrete benches covered with yellow velour outdoor cushions around the large fireplace. To have some vegetation that are inaccessible to the small pups, I designed randomly sized white aluminum planters with wood/storage bench on all corners of the yard, with low plants and bonsai trees. The planters and wood ipé bench which serves as storage was made to order and has led lightings fitted on its perimeter (outdoor speakers could also be fitted on these planters). What type of pool should I install?

Having shaded areas will give you more reason to stay poolside longer, too. Timber decking and stone paving are popular choices for pool surrounds, and are also helpful in creating zones. Leafy trees and rocks will create a more natural-looking oasis, and will help provide more privacy for swimmers. Where you want your landscape to be the main focus, keep pool equipment and furnishings to a minimum.
