A wall was removed to open up this remodeled kitchen into the living room of this midcentury modern gem in Madison, WI. White flat panel doors and slab drawers were selected for the modern theme. The original brick fireplace and hearth can now be seen from the kitchen and brings warmth to the space. The original floors were tiled but replaced with wood herringbone floors.

A complete house remodel with an extended open plan kitchen dining living space.
Our client was looking for a Scandinavian inspired kitchen with exposed wood and clean lines.
The symmetrical units also house the fridge and freezer keeping everything minimal and hidden away.

The kitchen opens to the green wall entry on the right side and the green house in the left. Large South and East facing windows provide copious amounts of warming sun and natural light. The beautiful concrete countertops were produced locally. Photographer: Vance Fox

Detail of black cabinets with gold hardware.
Old orangey oak cabinets were refinished to a light natural with satin finish on the upper cabinets. The transformation was subtle but impactful. The lower cabinets were painted a rich black. This tied in the black appliances and modernized the whole space! The same hardware was used on both uppers and lowers, but black on the top and gold on the lowers. Very chic! The old glazed ceramic tiles were demo'ed and new porcelain tiles were installed. The vertical orientation created visual height and is more modern than the traditional subway installation. Tiles were matched to the existing Corian countertops to give a seamless look to the counter to backsplash transition. The veined tiles up-date the look dramatically!

A black texturised door was used in this true handleless kitchen creating a moody aesthetic, paired with a copper effect vertical handlerail inbetween the tall units. The dark colour is perfectly proportioned with warm touches of oak and copper incorporated into the design.

Here is an overall shot. With hidden under cabinet lights the backsplash has only one cut-out in the glass (lightswitches to the left of the stove).
