Dramatic Aeonium 'Sunburst' Succulent brightens up the planting bed along the pathway in this project which was designed to gain more usable space. This narrow landscape included an update to the hardscaping and overgrown garden. My design reconfigured the pathway with poured-in-place concrete pavers accented by Mexican pebbles and a stunning variety of succulents and other site-appropriate plantings that thrive in shade and part sun. We removed the tree to create a patio area large enough to fit a table and chairs for a small group. Non-invasive/clumping Bamboo was added to help screen the patio and provide privacy. Other shade to part-shade plants were included that provide a variety of textures and colors throughout the seasons. Low-voltage lighting was installed for safety and ambiance. On the south side of the home is the family’s normal entrance. It is located in a somewhat awkward area between the driveway and the chimney. The chimney itself features an original architectural, brick detail which is visible in the winter following defoliation of the existing Boston Ivy. A new Campania urn and plinth are situated to be framed by this detail and has been connected to the client’s irrigation system for easier care. The urn is changed out seasonally for displays in spring, summer, fall and winter. Beneath the urn other seasonal displays can be displayed. Here is the fall display of mums, ornamental peppers and sweet potato vine in the urn which is echoed at the base by Swiss chard, mums and ornamental kale.

White birch branches and blue eucalyptus are used to accentuate the height of this cast stone planter, while a combination of white pine, fir and magnolia anochor the arrangement. Red ruscus provides the colorful red accent.

Large picture windows looked out onto the empty narrow side yard. Our solution was to create a dramatic 3D modular installation with CorTen Planters filled with low maintenance cacti.
