As a result of the work commencing on the lounge, we were also asked to design a cinema system that could be hidden into the master bedroom. The brief was to install something that offered the same level of quality as the ground floor cinema. We opted for a Screen Innovations ZERO G drop down screen again with slate ALR material due to the amount of natural light in the room. The screen drops out of the ceilings ‘trap doors’, giving the appearance of a screen floating in zero gravity. The Artcoustic ceiling speakers and subwoofer offer brilliant sound quality and give the entire system that ultimate cinema feel. Again, to match the ground floor cinema, the Sony Laser projector was used, not only is the 4K picture incredible but it is very quiet compared to a non-laser unit, which is perfect for bedtime viewing. Both home cinemas are controlled by their Control4 home automation system, lowering the blinds as the cinema is turned on, all from the click of one button.

Thought I'd post my modest home theatre project for a small room to help people create one without blowing budgets. Goal was to create a room that is for watch TV, movies and playing games. Room is approximately 14' x 18'. Key challenge was for gaming, i.e. Xbox Kinet and Wii, people's movement may get in the way of the projector. The solution was to use a short throw projector. The Benq 1085ST projector was used and there is < 6' of distance from the projector to the screen. The ottoman is movable and so is the seating (with large low friction pads underneath) to allow rearrange as needed. Room is finished off with acoustic panels (absorption on wall and ceiling with bass traps and diffuser in the back walls). The theatre has Dolby Atmos 7.2.4 setup with 11 total speakers (Front Left, Centre, Front Right, Left and Right surround, Left and Right rear surround, Ceiling front left and right, Ceiling rear left and right, as well as 2 subwoofers. The false wall in the front hides the front left, centre, right and one of the subwoofers.

This room is an open basement room with 2 bedrooms, an office, a mechanical room, and a full bath attached to it. It was a tricky space because it is also a hallway and children's play area. So given the confinement of not closing it off, I decided to create the sense of purpose through the furniture and the addition of the raised floor for the back row seating. While the space is not complete in this photo due to waiting on shipment of theatre equipment (retractable screen, projector, and in wall speakers) you can see that the addition of the raised floor creates an inviting and cozy space and allows big furniture to not be overwhelming because of the height difference. The basket under the buffet table is toy storage, and the table can be used as a serving station for parties or movie night. Out of the picture is a high-top game table that is painted with checker/chess board on it and a popcorn maker in the corner. I placed lush satin curtains on the back wall for the theatre atmosphere, but also to dampen the noise for the bedroom on the other side of the wall. A plethora of like-colored blankets in combination with four reclining seats makes this the perfect movie get-away.
