Detail of the ironwork fence recycled into wall art. The pieces are stunning, and their texture contrasts nicely with the old brick of the house wall. Vines will continue to grow over the ironwork and up the wall to soften the space. Joseph Andrew Townsend--townsendfilms; landscape Installation by John Shorb Landscaping, Inc.

A seasonal splash of golden colored Rudbeckia blazes in the rear patio. The over-sized ceramic fountain gives the garden an "Alice in Wonderland" quality that sets a carefree mood. Photo- Chris Jacobson, GardenArt Group

The design for the new custom stepped redwood fence and gate incorporated a narrow trellis top for Akebia vines. The horizontal slats are expressed with a modern reveal but there are no gaps, for privacy. The topiary trees are Majestic Beauty Hawthorns, which will quickly bulk up in height and spread and create even more privacy from neighboring houses. The narrow sidewalk planter has Liriope, Biokovo Geraniums and Ajuga

With amazing city views, its hard not to want to spend all your time living outside. With this design, you can. In one corner you have planters packed with seasonal vegetables that can be picked, rinsed and served, all within about 10 footsteps. Want some protein with that? No problem. The outdoor kitchen is set to feed a crowd, all while engaging friends over the bar, and into the dining area. Here, with built-in retractable pergola canopies, you can control your environment to whatever shade, sun, or night sky setting you desire. And then, when you can eat no more, kick-back and relax in the comfy, heated lounge seating area.

A new cottage was situated in back of a historic home in downtown Palo Alto. The task was to incorporate the new cottage to the existing landscape. A poured-in-place patio allows the homeowner and her dogs to have a place to sit in the sun, while a dry stack wall delineates the patio edge. Under a canopy of Redwood trees, water-wise plantings create a lush and inviting space. Photos by- David Easton Architect

An Arts and Crafts style home receives a makeover and much needed screening from a busy street. The front lawn is removed and bermed garden beds planted with bulbs, perennials, shrubs and climbing vines, Custom lattice adds visual interest and provides additional privacy. A curving flagstone sidewalk gracefully leads to the front door and to a small patio tucked out of view. A simple clay bowl becomes a tinkling water feature and large stone planters are filled with an ever-changing displays of annuals.
