After reconfiguring the drive, our team re-aligned the secondary walk toward the family parking area. Massed woody plants, perennials, and groundcover downplay the secondary entry from visitors, and are repeated around the property to create a consistent planting plan.

This driveway was designed to fulfill multiple functions. The pebble area bounded by brick acts as a huge drainage dissipator; the house downspouts are routed into it to allow roof runoff to percolate back into the soil rather than running out to the street. The brick border relates to the brick porch and the brick runners beyond while the warm beige salt-finish concrete creates an attractive setting for the pebble & brick centerpiece.

This project had a few different water & sunlight areas to consider. The front entry is mostly shady and the previous lawn area in the front yard is mostly sunny.
This client has a narrow side yard with neighbors very close. Columnar and vining plants were strategically used to gain some privacy on this side of the house.

On the site of an old family summer cottage, nestled on a lake in upstate New York, rests this newly constructed year round residence. The house is designed for two, yet provides plenty of space for adult children and grandchildren to come and visit. The serenity of the lake is captured with an open floor plan, anchored by fireplaces to cozy up to. The public side of the house presents a subdued presence with a courtyard enclosed by three wings of the house.

A old watering trough from the site was used as a water feature within the courtyard. Low maintenance plantings and traditional gravel pathways with paver edging flank the stone entry and are surrounded by low lath screen fences to formalize the space. This farmstead is located in the Northwest corner of Washington State. Photo by Ian Gleadle
