When you have a passion for collecting wine, you need to have a place to showcase and store the collection. We converted a finished area of the lower-level into a custom wine cellar. The cellar was constructed using ponderosa pine and premium redwood and can hold 1,138 bottles of wine. The walls were covered with moisture friendly pine tongue and groove paneling and a cooling unit was installed to keep every bottle at the perfect temperature.

This whole home renovation in Maple Ridge, BC turned this already large rancher into a sprawling new home for this family of 5. Additions to this home totalled over 1,500 square feet on all sides of the home. One wing of the rancher houses rooms for the home-owners 3 sons and the other side is the parents retreat. A gourmet kitchen with and island 15 1/2 feet in length are the centre of this home. A beautiful family room and dining room are just off the kitchen, all featuring circular coffered ceilings. The home also has a gym, massive laundry/mud room, home theatre, custom wine room, and kids playroom. Photos: Paul Grdina This penthouse in Port Coquitlam was not even 2 years old when SGDI was engaged to make it something more than ordinary. This was a typical condo, built for the masses, not for a specific owner. Nothing overly nice or interesting, average quality products throughout. This entire condo was gutted down to the studs and received an entire overhaul from ceilings to floors. Beautiful herringbone patterned walnut flooring, with custom millwork and classic details throughout. Intricate diamond coffered ceilings found in the dining and living room define these entertaining spaces. Custom glass backsplash set the scene in this new kitchen with Wolf/Sub-Zero appliances. The entire condo was outfitted with state of the art technology and home automation. A custom wine room with UV blocking glass can be found on the second floor opening onto the large rooftop deck with uninterrupted views of the city. The master suite is home to a retractable TV so views were not interrupted. The master ensuite includes a generous steam shower and custom crotch mahogany vanity. Masculine elegance with hints of femininity create a fantastic space to impress.

This beautiful wine cellar started life as a boring bedroom. We bricked in a window and designed the cabinetry to provide extensive wine storage including a display section. Cabinetry also conceals a fully integrated fridge drawer and an integrated dishwasher. We carried the European Oak parquetry flooring throughout the house including this wine cellar and finished it with a French bleed. The raw edges to the solid Jarrah benchtop and the half wine barrel (incorporating secret storage) give the overall design a slightly rustic edge, particularly when juxtaposed against the rich red and gold flock wallpaper, gold ceiling, Lee Broom crystal pendant light and brass cabinetry hardware.

What should I include in my wine cellar?

This depends on the size of your collection – or how big you hope it becomes. If you enjoy quaffing, you may want to invest in a walk-in cooler with wall-mounted wine racks and several tall wine fridges, as well as a tasting area with bar stools. If you’re a beginner or have a small collection, a home bar with mini fridge and wine rack will suffice. Essential bar accessories include wine glasses, corkscrews, carafes and aerators.

How should I store my wine?

Temperature control is at the core of a functional wine cellar. Your bottles need to be kept out of direct sunlight, and away from the heat and steam of kitchen appliances. A room that is too warm will make your wine age faster, oxidise and lose its character and flavour. If bottles are corked, they also need to be laid down. Your architect or designer will be able to help you create the ideal conditions for your home collection.

Where should I position my wine cooler?

The most important thing to consider is ease of access, which is why kitchens are the most common place to position wine coolers. Should you have minimal floor space, a small one could even sit comfortably on your countertop. If quaffing requires an occasion or you frequently host dinner parties, consider your dining room, so you can top up people’s glasses without having to leave the room. You could also make your bar fridge or cooler a destination within your entertainment or games room. There’s no denying that Aussies love to entertain and enjoy a glass or two outdoors, so if you’re lucky enough to have a covered outdoor area, this could be just the place for a cooler, too. Just ensure it doesn’t experience any extreme weather or long periods of direct sunlight.
