Need some structural info for a free standing pergola w/ columns

We are building two large pergolas ( 17x24) in a garden space. They will be free standing and use fiberglass columns 10 inches by 8 feet. . We have periodic high winds so I need the strongest way to secure the columns to the ground and deter sway.

    Your local building permit office will have information about the required attachment methodology. Start there since they will be the ones inspecting the structures.
