Yes to whitewashing!!! Also paint the doors and trim white, in my opinion the floor can stay if it is hardwood, or maybe painted dark charcoal white, polished concrete sounds great, too. And yes to pendants, maybe the bird cage ones that seem to be very popular. Reupholster sofas in a solid white or blue, put a large blue and white striped rug and white curtains.

Hi Ang, I thought I'd follow up my earlier comment with pictures of before and after of pine cupboards I specified to be painted in a budget makeover. My clients tell me people presumed they had purchased brand new cabinetry, so startling was the makeover. Somehow I have put the "after" on the left and "before" image on the right!

I'd like to suggest that the most important thing here is more about who is using the room. If It's a child's bedroom use lovely children's curtains - there's so much around and any pattern could pick up the wall and floor colours. If a guest room and not used often I'd suggest a beautiful velvet or good quality Linen and forbid the little ones from going in to that room!!!!!! alternately a blind attached at floor level could be raised or lowered so the view is still there but with privacy from waist height perhaps. Depends on what kind of fittings you'd like on the pendants! If you're happy with the smaller ones, don't worry about changing them unless they don't provide enough light.
