Joanna Gains style is fun! What you choose for lighting and surfaces will determine the amount of reflective light in your stairway. The Architect is right in what he is suggesting "a decorative wall" could bring more light into the space. I believe you could apply this on principle....for example you could do a feature "Architectural Mirror"or lots of mirrors on the wall in the right position to reflect light in "Joanna Gain style" then in the same style add an eye catching pendant or wall lights depending on what is best functionally. Remember what you use on the ceiling & walls is important too every surface counts for your situation. Try a satin finish with a cool white like Dulux "St Clair Quarter" or Resene "Black White" Maybe Nancy's suggestions of a skylight is an option for your situation if it allows ? Hi guys, I need help with the layout of my kitchen. Had a scullery at the back but hated closing off the room. How can I have a large pantry , plenty of bench space and a spacious feel all at the same time? anyone got any good ideas?

Just a thought though , instead of paint ( its a bit hard for me to visualise everything from your description -- I am a visual person ) how about maybe those translucent blue looking tiles ( yes , I know , extra cost ) , you may even 'frame' them in the white tiles to tie in with the shower , or possibly do the blue instead of the white , or even do the shower in them , and have the rest your 'white' walls . And when I say about those tiles , you can get them in square or subway or even long skinny ones , or even long and skinny but with long skinny darker blue and brushed ali ones too -- in other words , have fun and add interest !
