Problem with farmhouse sink

We built this house a year and half ago. Some how our farmhouse sink was installed incorrectly. There is a gap between the sink and cabinet. The cabinet guy says it was the granite guys fault and granite guy says it was the cabinets guy fault. Neither will fix it.
Now we are stuck. Can anyone fix this?problem? Who should I call?

A year and a half ago??? You should have noticed it the same day that the cabinet installer set the sink.

You thoroughly own the problem. I would have politely told you that rather than just not returning your phone calls, but it's a pound sand message either way you get it. If it bothers you enough, pay for the tops to be pulled and the sink adjusted with all of that associated risk. You're the GC, figure out what will make the customer happy with the least expense on your part. Caulk, usually.

have you tried filling the gap with matching caulking? I assume that the issue is a matter of aesthetics and the gap causes no other issues.

It's the cabinet guys fault. They aren't deep enough.

I'm guessing he's already been paid....

Hello Marcelle, I am an interior designer . I can tell you a simple inexpensive way to change the look of your kitchen. Looking at the photo you sent the different cabinet heights , and all the objects on the stove wall are very busy . Your modern house is wanting a cleaner , simple look. I would lower the small cabinets so that the top is at the same height as the others in the room. And put doors on , that will hide the clutter. Next I would do a tile backsplash above the stove , up to the same height. The whole kitchen will be pulled together by the continuous top line. There is a small light wood cabinet with baskets in the foreground . I would paint it white , or the same dark accent color of the cabinets you have. I don't think you would need to change the beams then , they would add interest and drama once everything else was subdued. Lisa

If you use masonry paint, we could head in a warm greige direction for all of it - not so yellow . .. something that can give you a bit more contrast against the white windows and trim - even 40 does a lot for us . . . what about a blue green gray? Thank you for all your comments. We have been looking at the black granite composite made by Franke but is triple the price of Blanco. Was concerned the black composite would scratch etc. will probably go two stainless steel, because as previous poster mentioned the blacks are never the same. Sure I will be back for more help or advise.

For your planting advice, I suggest you call Merrifield Garden Center to see if they will come out your way. They currently have wonderful garden centers in Merrifield and Fairfax (both in Fairfax County) and a new one in Gainesville, but they may come further south to wherever you reside. (www.MerrifieldGardenCenter.com) Even if they don't send designers to your area, they are worth a trip to see their huge selection for a day of pleasure and inspiration, or to pick up some plants. Hmmm...it's the general contractor's fault...coordinating between the trades is their job. That looks like a Kohler...maybe the Dickerson? Kohler gives really good specs for the cabinet guy to build from....and the cabinet guy doesn't set the sink. Whoever put the sink in owns at least part of this. If it couldn't go all the way in, an adjustment needed to be made and a discussion should have happened. So...who placed the sink?

We contracted the build our self.
The sink was place when we were not on site.
I just don't know who to contact to try to fix it since the contractors we used are not responsive.

We definitely noticed the issue the minute we saw the sink. It has been an issue of unresponsive contractors. Each contractor blamed the other one and gave promises to come fix it but never did.

At this point, I just want to pay new contractors to fix it. I just don't know what direction to go. Plumber, granite contractor, or cabinet???

If you have no DIY ability to hook up plumbing, then all 3 are gonna be needed. The granite folks can uninstall the top (breakage MAY happen, and the cutout won't fit the new sink installation the same way). The cabinet specialist can tweak the sink position and support within the cabinet. And the plumber can unhook and then hook up the plumbing in two separate trips. If you are lucky, you can find someone who can combine all of those skills in one person. That's not that common though.

A $5 tube of caulk is a heck of a lot cheaper than all of that will run. Especially if the stone breaks and you have to fix the crack or redo the counters. I'd expect that to run $1500 minimum to start with, without replacing any stone or recutting anything. More if you're in some place like NYC or Seattle.

you could contact the contractor licensing agency regarding your contractor. this might put the fire under the contractor to respond.

kelley they were their own contractor. its a matter of identifying which aspect needs to be fixed to make it seat correctly.

i'm with sophie. without being able to see the sink top to know what else might be wrong, caulking the sink to the cabinet would be the most straight line fix.

Another option might be to grout the gap, which would be more attractive than caulk. You can try to match the color of the cabinets or contrast it. The grout might separate from the cabinet a little, but not enough to be a problem. Make sure to seal the grout with a waterproof sealer.
