A fire always feels like you need seating in front of it and this feels like a focal point (the fire) is blocked. Will the table fit in font of the glass block windows? If you do that put more colorful chairs in the space so your eye will be drawn to the area. Then put the white chair in front of the fire.

yes you're right re sitting in front of the fire - and another reason it doesnt feel right there. The original intention of that area with the glass block walls was to sit to the side and relax (it gets the evening sun) - I have considered switching it round as you say, but I didnt want to put the table there..... we don't even use the table!! Great minds think alike re. the chairs needing to be colourful and interesting. Thanks so much for your help

I was thinking that if you dont use the table at all, dont have it. But if you do use the table occasionally you could move it to where the glass block windows are and turn the area by the fire into another lounge.

Another option is to get a much larger table so it becomes a hero feature of the space. Centre it under the light fixture, and replace the light with a large pendant that drops down over the table.

yes another person has said just make the table a feature - i couldnt change the light though as two lights are together in the raised ceiling - it would look odd I think. I think I need to make a statement with the table tho. thanks

I echo what someone has said. I am not so sure it is the table, but the carpet. The hardwood flooring in the kitchen needs to be in the entire space, then you'd just need to change the table chairs.

As you have downlights in the whole area you could remove the second ceiling light, and replace it with a large floor lamp by the couch. This would further accentuate the table and the pendant over it :-)

Instead of new chairs why not create a banquette in front of the glass blocks so you could still lounge there. The table would look great there.

Great space! The table is too small for the space, it would immediately help if you had head chairs on either end of the table. It would read larger. If you're interested in a new dining set, try a round dining table, seating at least 6 for size.

You need something to define each space, a new furniture arrangement could help. I would try rotating the sectional so that its off of the window.
