Paint Color for Open Space Room
Help, Houzz! I'm working on my open-space superroom. I'm getting ready to order this sectional in this dark gray color (reversed). My floors are very dark brown. I plan to buy a large carpet that is either light or similar to the one in the picture. (If anyone has suggestions for the carpet, please let me know.) The right side of the sectional will be against the wall. The left side will float. Behind the floating side (about 6 feet), will be a wall with built-in white cabinets under windows. I have to get the wall color right. I'm thinking of something in the grays (maybe SW). Because there will be little else in the room besides the sectional, I don't want the walls to wash out. I need for them to be "present" to frame the sectional. Suggestions, please! I'm also looking for window coverings. The back of the house opens to someone else's house back.

How to make best use of laundry space?
Comments (6)I would suggest your plumber links the hot and cold fill pipes to the supply UNDER the sink - this gets rid of unsightly pipes and while he's there get him to move the taps to the L side of sink. I would then create a broad drop down counter top to create a place to sort your laundry ready for hanging out to dry or to fold ready for ironing This drop down counter top to be hinged to R side of washing machine and ensuring the taps are not impeded. If you can't do the drop down version then create a free standing top made out of a piece of MDF/laminated board to put over the sink and washing machine for clothes sorting & folding. This free standing top can 'live' at the side of the washing machine when not needed. I would then put shelves above the folded back counter top to store washing powder and sundries. I would store the washing powder etc in colourful or white boxes to keep the place looking tidy and uniform. Handles on the boxes for ease of access. Comments (8)Mona you have seen exactly the dilemmas I'm facing with this room so I really appreciate your comments. I was focusing on no1, but really 2 and 3 are on my mind too. In terms of getting some continuity between the rooms I was planning on recovering the dining chairs in a fabric to tone with cushions/throws on the white couch, ottomans in a matching tone, and pulling this colour scheme through into cushions in the formal lounge. I love the spring colours at the moment (greens, blues etc) which you can see i'm playing with at the moment but you might be able to see the painting in the formal room which is orange, red and yellow with a blue/purple base. So I'm very keen on colour and so tired of the brown carpet and neutral walls. I was also going to restain the dining table and chairs to a dark mahogany colour, and change the bar stools to something more modern. re: rug closer to sofa, I've done this and it looks off-balance with nothing else in the space. It seems to work better in the middle of the carpet area at the moment. Perhaps thats because I haven't ordered the ottomans yet. I don't want to add a coffee table to this room as prefer Ottoman to put feet up on. I've attached a pic of a rug, do you think something like this would work better? re the wall: yes this is the major for me at the moment. It is a TV room so tv and speakers stay and I wont be adding any custom cabinetry. The idea was to increase the space in this room by removing all of the cabinets and they are now in the adjoining room. The speaker covers have not been painted as I needed to work out what wall covering to apply, and colour etc. so once they are painted the wall colour they will blend in better. Comments (2)Hi Rochelle, because you've gone with all natural tones, any strong colour just stands out too much and never looks quite right. Ditch the red. I think your idea of plants is a good one. Green works in with that natural pallette well. Get a lush green pot plant for your coffee table and maybe a bigger plant in a high pot that can stand on the ground. Buy a good sized, beautiful print of natural landscape and hang it on the best wall (instead of what you have). Get some funky cushions that work with the print and buy one of those luxurious fake fur throws in a colour similar to your mat. This will add more softness and texture to the room. 8 years agoThanks, Nancy! I tried to make a picture of the space, and I think I have the proportions right. There are windows above the white cabinets at the back of the "super room." On the right side of the room behind the plant are French doors going to a small patio. (The master suite is not extended as shown in the diagram.) Above the server in the dining room there's also a window. I really appreciate your help!

8 years agoYou nailed it! I just get scared when people put furniture on floor plans and they are not the same scale. I tweeked it a little bit in that I think you need more furniture. I would get one chair to match your sofa and then maybe two accent chairs with a little table in between. Otherwise all the furniture would be on one side. Also would go with a round coffee table instead of square.
So back to original question. Do you have any other colors in mind. I don't think a gray wall with gray sofa will get the look you are going for.

8 years agoI since you have some sort of console planned for the living room, I would consider not having one in the dining room and go for a larger table. I would not do blinds -go for a contemporary shade instead.

8 years agoMore contemporary - everybody has the 2" blinds-kinda cheesy looking to me. There are all kinds. You can get them so light still filters in and the other side blocks out neighbor's view. I like the zebra shade and you can also get the kind that can go up and down. There's just so many options now besides blinds.
