Fireplace renovation

Very keen to know what people would do with this fireplace. Under the mantle there is old brick that has been plastered and painted over. The brick only extends the length of the floor tiles. From the right of the tiles it is plasterboard. We want to install an inbuilt gas fireplace and expand the size of the woodstore so it can accommodate DVD player etc. What would you do?

You have a great opportunity here. I do not recommend placing a tv over a fireplace. Yes, we see it often, but it is not practical for two reasons: 1, the tv has to be placed too high and 2, it is hard on the eyes to be looking at the fireplace light and the tv

What I would do is to remove the plaster and re-expose the brick. You could paint it an interesting color or resurface it. Then, I would add a unique mantle.If you have the funds, ideally the threshold should be removed (more contemporary) or resurfaced (more traditional style) The wood store could be a book shelf or display shelf. In the right corner, I would place a comfortable reading chair. The TV I would place on a different wall. Without seeing the entire room, I am not sure where.

Might I suggest a more contemporary picture frame mantel with mosaic stone tile between that and your firebox? Love the near craftsman window shapes flanking the fire wall . . . use the height on both sides, / shallow shelves on one side can visually frame a swing arm for your television and give real storage on the other side.

Well the piece above the fireplace really overwhelms the space, and most specifically the fireplace. Is there another wall space anywhere that can showcase it? trying to use this piece in such a small area makes everything else lose its appeal, it has to fight to be seen. For sure move the sofa where it faces the fireplace, or set at an angle facing where you hv the TV set to be mounted. If you can, leave the chair in the same area, use the table the TV is sitting on as a coffee table for both. The way that makes the space work is the way you need it.

Thanks for that AJ Interiors. Yes we have painted chimney breast (white- same as walls) We have a bought a huge dark grey mirror (metal) which has a slightly industrial feel but also in a traditional French style shape (I'm not describing this very well!) the two combinations will hopefully work well in a tradition villa, giving it a modern look. But we really need an injection of colour to lift everything. Am looking for some copper/metallic bedside lights. We're doing a big renovation including a 75m2 extension to an old farm cottage. We've used houzz heaps - everything from the design of a feature fireplace to the front door and family bathroom. Just 6 more weeks till completion and we're expecting it to make some very good 'before and after' pics based on how grotty the 'before' scenario was!

If you use the "down and out mount" over the fireplace, you can lower the TV to the correct viewing angle. Also, concerning where to store AV equipment, speakers, wires, Blu-Ray and other consoles- I would recommend using "Entertainment Center TVCoverUps". Framed artwork or panel provides the focal point of the room, until it swings upward to reveal the hidden TV. It comes in automatic and manual lifts and allows for TV tilting hardware(such as the "down & out mount"). By using the "Entertainment Center TVCoverUps", you eliminate extra furniture needed to store these items. Instead, all the equipment is stored inside the TVCoverUps.

The current offset fireplace works best with the TV centered on the wall. One option is to clad the lower portion with stone to create a bit of distinction.
