We have very similar narrow side gardens. Judging from your picture, I'm guessing that you get more sun on the left. So, close to the door you could have pots of varying sizes and similar colour with dark leaf cannas and contrasting agaves potted, which won't overtake your garden because of the pot restriction. On the shade side, I'd plant ferns at intervals with clivia inbetween. You could also put up some chicken wire on the fence and train jasmine. On the sunny side, cordyline show-off, vireya rhodos, hibiscus (beautiful varieties) and bromeliads for groundcover. Good luck and have fun.

Hi, any suggestions on how to make the front entrance more inviting and practical?. The entrance gets morning sun (3rd photo) and the lawn area gets midday and afternoon sun. We have a high water table too. Any suggestions on pathways and plantings would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Oliver, not sure if you are still after some ideas or not. I would paint the concrete steps a neutral medium grey and the front door a reasonably bold colour of your choice that fits in with the 'Deco' style of your house. Maybe a bold blue or green could work. Alternatively, if it fits with other detailing around the house, paint the steps a deep terracotta/brick colour and the front door a darker deep colour of smokey blue or keep it black.
