Small balcony Ideas

I live in a apartment and we have a small balcony coming off the living room. The view isn't particularly amazing but with summer coming up I really want to do what I can to make it a nice place to sit and read a book in the sunshine. Any ideas or suggestions would be amazing! I love plants and colour!

Well that is an interesting picture.

I can assure you that hanging wall gardens are all the rage and that is a great idea but they can also be high maintenance if exposed to high winds / sunshine etc. I have seen some lovely fake ones that would do just as well. You could also have a few pots with additional greenery. As you say your view is not "great" maybe you can have a creeper in one of the pots that can weave its way through the railing. I probably wouldn't go for one big chair as it could dominate the entire space. I would consider a table with a couple of fold-able chairs .... something that is comfortable, inviting if you have friends over but can be placed in a corner if you just want to open up the space. I do not think you need a carpet and but maybe some fancy outdoor tiles will look just as nice. You want it to be easy care and weather proof.

Do you need or wish to incorporate a washing line? A pull out one from a wall will be perfect that way you can retract it back when you are not using it.

If you deck gets too much sun, you may want to consider some shade shutters. I have seen them called 'plantation' shutters.

What a lot of good suggestions from Bernadette! Go for small single items of furniture that make minimal visual impact - eg, fine 'wire' or steel rod furniture. Greenery is a must I think. You could hang window boxes on the outside of your balcony rails so as not to encroach on your space. If the view is not great add some taller plants or even wires or screens for clambering plants. Think about lighting.

Place couple of chairs and small table at one end and 3 pots at the other, along with planters along the front of the railing, pierced metal candle sconces on the walls and you're made!

I would consider a small retaining wall perhaps 2-3 planks high this will provide support to the bank but also allow the pathway to remain clear and formal. The ferns seem to be doing well but could do with a tidy up. I would also prune the tree so it allows a bit more light into the section to help prevent dampness, you also want to take it away from the house, without destroying it's natural shape. As ferns seem to naturally want to grow there, you could continue that theme. Perhaps some other shade / cooler temperature type plants with some flowers could be a good addition. I am not sure which plants can tolerate the cold Dunedin winters, so you best contact is your local garden centre. You want plants that are lush all year round. Also have a look at other plants growing in the neighbourhood as that will give you a good idea of what does and doesn't do well in your climate. Good Luck.

Hi everyone, I'm planing to make my grandma a surprise and do a makeover to her apartment. I'm facing multiple issues. I'm overseas and in her area can't find any architects/designers on Houzz, so I'll need to find inspiration and when I'm going on holiday in few months organise with a local contractor. One other issue, it's an old communist type of apartment, with heaps of walls and small rooms, which I'd prefer to keep this way, otherwise I'll need to involve engineers and so on. I'm thinking to do mainly bath and kitchen (apartment layout 4-kitchen; 7-bath), the rooms are fine, maybe some new fresh coat of paint. For kitchen I'm thinking to put a barn style door, they seem to be in fashion and will save some space. One issue here, kitchen will need to have some sort of eating area as well, maybe a small collapsable table I was thinking, although, it will make it harder for her. There's concrete floor, which I'm planning to keep as it is, maybe put some clear epoxy or repolish it, with some white cabinets? What are you guys thinking? Bathroom wise, I'll need some advice on the bath tub area. At this moment, there's a nice iron tub with cast iron legs, I believe that with bit of love and new paint it will look nice, or remove it completely and put a walk in shower with nice glass wall? Thinking of having vintage tiles laid and some white tiles on walls, maybe similar to subway ones, or square? Probably will go with a lot of white stuff as there's no natural light coming through. Hello everyone =) Only In the early stages of redesigning kitchen (for the first time). I'm doing this on quite a tight budget, so will not be moving plumbing around. Below are the first set of drawings that have received - to which have made a few modifications to and you can see my notes are written all over it. Drawing is pretty close to scale, and have already extended bench on the left to make room for a breakfast bar- so this can't go out any further. I feel that I do have at least 1 or 2 areas of wasted space (see blue note on 2nd image), and am hoping for any ideas/solutions what i could do for this corner, or any other suggestions for that matter would be fantastic. Thank you! FYI i have asked and there is not enough room for a 'lazy susan' corner cupboard.

If you have lived in England...with washing machine in the kitchen as a normal everyday thing, then I don't think people mind, they probably LOVE having a laundry ! Our front door is basically the laundry sliding door, so I'm putting our laundry into a cupboard so it's hidden, I think it put people off buying the house...entering via laundry. (10 weeks on market, we were the only offer) A pantry ' in a laundry' or vice versa doesn't worry me. My last laundry was in the garage. And big sep pantry in kitchen, I would rather a pantry with machine..than no pantry. A pantry to me is big kudos
