Do you have a floor plan/sketch to show rooms in relation to each other and dining etc.

I would use the playroom space for a pantry. Assuming you get rid of the current pantry in the reno, you'll actually be able to make the family room bigger. Do you want to be able to see through to the kitchen from the family room?
We've just built a rather large butlers/food pantry off our kitchen and it's fantastic. We've been able to minimise overhead cabinets in the main kitchen, so it feels more like a relaxing room instead of a crazy work space.

You've got so much space to work with - you could do some amazing things.

EG - build a pantry/storage BEHIND the kitchen (along the wall with two windows) and bring the kitchen wall and a massive, streamlined island further out toward where the fridge and pantry are now.

Is the wall between the kitchen and playroom structural?

I'm not a fan of butler's pantry's. Bit of a fab really. Who actually has a butler...? LOL.

Having said that I'm not a fan of the playroom idea either mainly because of it's current smallish size. Therefore I'd go for a butler's pantry. It would suit the house as the house is large, has more than one living zone, etc. Thumb's up from me!

Whatever your choice, it'd be a pity to lose the two (pretty) windows currently in "family" area.

I think the decision rests with whether you NEED a butlers pantry! No point in putting one in just because the room is there. But as one post suggested you could loose the current pantry, thus enlarging the family room, and then you maybe have need for a large pantry.

I am a little dubious about a 'butlers pantry' idea in general - a storage pantry is most useful but having appliances etc in another room just means more walking from room to room during meal preparation. I think deciding to include a butlers pantry would require a great deal of thought on exactly how you would use the space. A cleanup space - yes that could be handy; where dishes and pots could be stashed during a meal, saving the kitchen proper for serving up. Still means a lot of walking! I think the kitchen work triangle is still a useful concept!

And those big island benches with a sink - so your guests can sit and chat while you cook, and watch the dishes piling up under their noses? Ugh! Not for me! They look lovely when clean and EMPTY, but as a usable sociable area, not practical. (Sorry for the rant; has nothing to do with your question or your kitchen, but this is a bugbear of mine!)

You could really transform your lies if you use this space as a butler's pantry. It's a huge storage area, but rather than duplicate things you have in the kitchen, reduce or choose where you would put one f each item.

Learn how to preserve fruit and vegetables, buy in bulk to reduce costs, the possibilities are endless for you. You can combine storage for other types of things if you're short in other areas of the house.

I'm seeing a lot of honed black sandstone on US TV - it looks great. Consider for your benchtops instead of what we more commonly see here in highly polished marble.

Good luck with the renovation. Make sure you run Category 6 network wires so you can connect devices and appliances now and in the future....don't rely on wireless.
