Comments (9)Thanks Carole, yes we are very keen to knock out that wall - I have to be restrained from bringing the sledgehammer inside until we get a proper load-bearing beam organised! Once thats done and the books are off the floor and on the wall opposite we will have to think of rearranging this space - I still like it split up by a couch, but perhaps we could put a larger dining table in the new space....See More1940's NZ kitchen - small, awkward-ish layout.
Comments (121)I would suggest you take out the cabinet that is to the right of the stove and use it elsewhere in the house -- perhaps in the bathroom or dining room with a hutch above it. Then, I would suggest you have someone install a lazy susan cabinet in the corner between the sink counter and the stove, meaning you would move the stove down a bit and have a small cabinet/counter top to the right of the stove. I would suggest you have the cabinets refinished in white and then paint the walls a pastel you like. If you would prefer white walls, then add white-painted crown molding and paint the ceiling a light neutral blue, such as Sherwin Williams Niagara Falls Blue. Then, I would suggest you choose a favorite accent color and use this sparingly in accessories like towels, pot holders, small vases or floral arrangements, and a valence above the triple windows. For a genuine 1940s look, you might have white ceramic square tiles with a rectangular red border installed as a back splash behind and above the stove. If you are replacing counter tops, I would suggest a light color such as white with a beige or light grey vein or striation for some sort of pattern. You might be able to find the same color and design in floor tile OR opt for a wood floor as another poster suggested....See Moreflooring for the kitchen and possibly the dining room
Comments (9)One option you could opt for is to get a marble mosaic flooring. It is very durable and easy to clean. Furthermore, you can get virtually any rug pattern, design and color palette of your choice incorporated. Bonus: Marble mosaics work great in high-traffic areas. Here are some of our intricately handcrafted mosaic rugs and medallions so you get an idea of how they look: You don't need to worry about the shape and size. That's the beauty of mosaic, it can be customized to fit any surface. See anything you like? Have a favorite photo or pattern you'd like to be converted to a mosaic masterpiece? We can help! Comments (0)Purchasing this 2400 sq foot home near the beach. Love the open floor plan but want to update it. We are definitely planning to redo kitchen and floors and paint but am stumped with how it all should be laid out. The main floor consists of kitchen, LR, and sitting room which currently houses the dining room table. I am considering having the wood fireplace removed altogether as it doesn't get much use in low-country SC but am not sure how to lay out the room without it, e.g., where should LR go and on which wall should TV go? Also considering converting the f/p to electric so that it is not a hazard and can be the focal point of room and place to mount TV. The home will also be used for short-term rentals so having a TV and dining room table are essential. Any and all suggestions are greatly appreciated....See MoreBruce Crawford
