Setting up our lounge

We have just bought a flat and are wondering how best to use our lounge space. We are thinking of putting shelves in the alcove with a cupboard or stacking cubes/cabinet at the bottom. The fireplace needs work to improve it and is not in the centre of the wall and the entrance from the hallway is to the left.

We have looked at some floating shelves, maybe going as high as the door frame but probably don’t want one big cabinet. We were thinking of maybe having the tv on one of the shelves or above the fireplace (not working). Any advice/ideas would be great!

Not sure if that's a gas or electric fire. However, if it's not working it's not a lot of use. You can buy very nice traditional electric fireplaces these days Fireplaces4life. If you go for electric it may be easier to square everything up. Remove the sockets from the front of the fireplace and re-route them to the right. Something like this

Congratulations on your new flat! Sounds exciting! We would conceal the TV in the fireplace and put a nice piece of art or a mirror above the fireplace. On the left side you can have an interesting metal drink trolley and a palm tree and on the right side a low fitted cabinet and then shelves that go all the way up..

I think your original idea to put the TV on the wall between the sliders was correct. I don't think a TV ever belongs in front of a window. After you move the TV, put the two chairs closer together under the window with a table between them, and rotate the sofa to face the TV. You may have to angle the TV (but not the TV cabinet) toward the seating for viewing, but I think it will be a more satisfactory arrangement for you.

Well, for lack of a better idea, since you find it a drafty little space. I'm assuming the draft comes in on the right? Most of the necessities in the area are located of the left side; i.e. vent, thermostat, light switch etc. What I would do I think is caulk up the drafty spots, maybe even add sized poster board wrapped in batting I covered in a gorgeous fuscia with diagonal grosgrain ribbons every which way covered with a heavy velvet to be attached to the area above & below the window. (Of course remove the drapes that are hanging in there). This for the purpose of using it as a pin-it board for notes. Attach a table height board covered in felt to carry across the full width of the little room. Leaving just enough space for a comfortable little antique desk chair. Paint the back wall a bright cobalt blue, paint the ceiling a silvery pearlescent white. Find a way to attach a clip-on task lamp. And stretch a heavy duty enough wire across the top of the opening and complete it with a heavy doubled velvet drape with a drooping valance. Place a swag with fringe & jewels on it to be closed when not in use. Voila intrigue is yours!

Thanks very much for all your feedback. Just to answer a few queries - the deck is directly outside the main room so the new doors open out onto it. The doors won't be French - they're just the only doors that the 3D planner I'm using had, they'll actually be large stacking doors. I've had another idea too which would be a lot more expensive but offers a completely different approach. This is quite rushed so doesn't show accurate layout of kitchen or anything like that, basically just provides an idea. Thoughts!?

I assume you have sailed into your renovations Susan ? The pictures actually look like 2 different houses -- different colours , different styles . I quite like the 'red' ( 2 storey ) side of the house -- even the conservatory and that pattern on the deck railing -- personally I'd paint it in a charcoal , but it's liveable . NOT a fan of the yellow opaque glass , and I'd paint around the outside of your 2 garage doors approx 80-100mm wide white borders to match the rest of the joinery . The other side though -- the roof ( as you said ) would be my first thing -- I'd go a browny/red , very similar to the panels on the other side of the house . The gutters and window sills I'd go a superbright blood red , and even though I agree about the cream veneer bricks and steps -- I'd leave the veneer , and either paint , or preferably tile , the steps in charcoal , and add a couple of 'chunky' stainless rails on the sides . And the base board -- I'd do it in charcoal too . It would not only look better , but make the house look longer and sleeker .

I think you need to use cupboards to address the fact that the fire isn’t central on the chimney breast. Give the illusion that the chimney breast goes all the way to the window wall by putting a tall cupboard, coming slightly forward of the chimney breast. On the other side of the fireplace, maybe put some kind of slimline art, to fill that wall space. The TV could go above the fire. Possibly too put some shelves between the chimney breast and the door.

If you were going to redo the fireplace, then you could make a mantel shelf and hearth across the full width of the chimney breast to bring back the balance. The area next to the fire could have some nice flower arrangement or statue of some sort, sitting on the hearth. If you google for off-centered fireplace you’ll get the idea. Thank you for all the advice. We are probably not going to worry about doing anything to the fireplace at this stage. We like the idea of a larger cupboard to make the chimney breast seem bigger and the slimline art is something we are going to look into.
