The thinking was that since the kitchen was to be open not only to the dining area, but to the backyard via the window wall system, there wouldn't be a lot of cabinet storage and a pantry would be necessary. Deeper lower shelves allow for large items like serving trays to be stored while shallower upper shelves allow for an accessible counter top for setting things on when retrieving, staging, or prepping.
