Help with impossible lounge layout
Hi,
I would be so, soooo grateful for help to make our lounge room layout work better.
Its a beautiful room, which we would like to make the most of the garden view, however it needs to also work as a family of 4 lounge room, with enough comfortable seating to sit around and watch movie on occasion.
I wanted to utilise the back wall with a large couch, which is great, but then it looks like you are sitting & staring at the front entrance. Plus, if you put the TV near the entrance, those 2 side walls are a narrow fit for a tv, and it feels like walkway space.
When I put the TV on the main back wall, when you walk in the front door you are greeted with the back of a couch, and a closed off room, having to manoeuvre a bit to get to the bedroom.
Iv tried for months, and months - any creative genius's out there?

4 years agoIf you use French doors, get them changed to swing out. Place one three seater couch and two single chairs, and television as per attached rough sketch.

Comments (29)I think the first layout is fine. You might want to consider moving the door for the storage room of the master bedroom so that it opens into the hall. That way the kids can use it for overflow storage. Also, that hallway is big enough that I think it could hold a large armour, providing more closet space. (There's no need to sleep in the same room as your clothes, so long as they're not too far off.) Also, don't forget that while the drawing shows kids in double beds, this need not be the case, so there will be more room for furniture (dressers or whatever) in their rooms. Finally, that step to bedroom 4 will not be odd at all. I've seen it in other homes. It looks clumsy in the drawing but it isn't. What you'll see when you come up the stairs is a bedroom door on a slight diagonal. It's only an odd jagged step if you walk like a robot, in straight lines along the wall, which is what your eye is doing on the drawing but you won't do in real life....See MoreConservatory sunroom help

Comments (4)Like everything , it comes down to budget and 'value for money' -- generally both the cheapest but also the most expensive aren't the best options -- its doing things 'cleverly' . The entrance foyer looks like it may be a bit dark and closed in , but you don't really want to open the wall between it and the kitchen either . Not really in the 'brief' , but I'd look at opening up the doorway into the lounge -- I guess it depends whether you close that door often ? To me , the only way/place to get more room would be 'open' the double doors and however much more you can between the lounge and family room ( before you strike load bearing walls near the wood burner ) , move the dining room to the family room , and then basically do whatever you like with the kitchen , utilising the existing space and the existing dining space . That may work , or maybe you don't want to combine the lounge and family room , in the latter case maybe move the lounge to the existing family room , utilising the window seats and maybe downsize your lounge suite , wall mount a TV , etc . And then use the existing lounge as dining and family area ? None are ideal , but thats my 'off-the-top-of-my-head' thoughts ....See Morepamplemousse1

Kate - you are spot on! the previous owners had this room styled for relaxation/garden view, however for our family of 4 - the function is the key thing.
Dreamer - your sketch is super helpful! exactly where I put the TV - and feels the most 'normal'. I might change the furniture to your suggestion. The 2 seater cream couch fits where the chair is, without blocking the bedroom access. Do you think better?
Unfortunately the french doors open inward, and recessed sill's won't allow the change :-(
Here are some photos...I am wanting to replace all the furniture/this is all from the Op shop Iv had for years. I can clear the clutter...but would love to still keep some books/musical instruments in there - maybe all in a different unit (tall) with the TV/books included?
A friend suggested a big tall corner cabinet with the TV inside, on that corner wall directly opposite to dreamers sketch..which I thought about, but unsure on also

4 years agoThank you oklouise. I got the tape measure out! and measured all the walls - as slightly different from real estate floor plan. At this point in time, we can't do any changes to door openings - just hoping to get this room working with the space we have.
We don't use the french doors to be honest - they can stay closed for now. Thank you :-)

4 years agoOk, what about changing bedroom door, make it a cavity slider and moving it as far to left as possible, this should let you put a couch along that wall.
Tv mount on a swivel arm in the corner to left of windows. Two arm chairs in the other corners, see crude sketch.
