90's Kitchen Transformation - Before & After

For this project, we were engaged to work alongside an interior designer who was tasked with modernising a dark and outdated 90's home.

Our brief was to create a sense of openness and space whilst maximising all available natural light and making the most of the generous full height of the room in order to maximise storage and provide futureproof functionality. The client wanted a look that wasn't cluttered or busy and allowed for maximum storage and functionality whilst providing points of interest and attention to detail.

We started by removing the corner pantry and separate fridge freezer whiteware from the former kitchen's design. This enabled the oven to be moved to the right-hand wall, dramatically increase space around the hob. The fridge space was created around the clients chosen new appliance. Not wanting to be constrained by this in the future we put in a wine rack and narrow cupboard that can be removed to accommodate a twin door appliance should they or future owners ever wish to upsize.

In respecting the client's wish for maximum storage whilst maintaining a sense of space and including points of interest, we opted not to install full height cabinetry as this can enclose a small space and make it feel claustrophobic and 'boxy'. The brief was achieved by adding in open timber shelves above the fridge level with the addition of units to the ceiling beyond this. The sense of space and a point of interest was achieved with the addition of lighting within the shelving units.

A negative detail was added under the benchtop matching the open shelf to give some depth and interest at the lower level. In order to maintain simplicity and clean lines, we opted to use the same stone for benchtop and the splashback, thereby avoiding any potential clashes of tones or texture.
