flooring replacement

We would like to rip out our existing carpets in the bedrooms and replace them with floorboards. Challenge is that we have SYDNEY Blue Gum running down the corridors. Suggestion on the type of floorboards to make the transition more seamless and less patchy, do we have to match exactly or complementary ones and are we likely to have problems installing from a level perspective?

I totally agree with all of Austere's points above - there's nothing quite like waking up and stepping onto a soft flooring in the mornings, as opposite to a cold hard floor! Ive got floorboards in the bedrooms (from the previous homeowner) but ended up making an oversized rug under and around my bed. Also I found that dust clouds would form and show a lot quicker with floorboards, reducing the air quality in the room, while carpet actually traps the dust from getting airborne and being visible.

If the floorboards in your hall are original (and not installed as a floating floor) then there is a good chance you may have the same Sydney Bluegum under your carpets. If your hallway flooring is a floating floor then the only way to get a seamless finish with the same direction of the "boards" is probably to rip it all up and do a new floor for hallway and bedrooms.

HI Emily Carpeting bedrooms is only dictated by your budget. The only variable is the price of the carpet, all other costs (installation, smoothedge, underlay) will be the same no matter what you choose. When you say remove wooden floors....do you know what is already installed? If you are only wanting to take the wood from the bedrooms but leave it in hallways etc, then the cost to remove wood planks (laminate?) may be around $20 per m2... A lot depends on how the timber was installed, so I think it's best to get in a professional and get a free quote. Good luck.

Get the professional sander guys in to repair the living areas and kitchen but don't go too dark with the stain as it will kill the lovely grain in the matai. I'm thinking a couple of tones richer than the timber knots showing in your photo, definitely no yellow tone at all. In NZ stepping on to carpet especially in a kiwi winter is so much nicer than a cold floor board shock!!! A nice area rug for the lounge and you're done.

Hi Temika We do this successfully on renovations. You do need to be mindful that the concrete under a copper washer are thick. Most floors can be matched successfully without over laying.

Is laminate flooring falling out of favour with suppliers?

I’ve noticed suppliers that used to push laminate flooring, have replaced that with “hybrid” which, as far as I can tell is simply vinyl planks under a new name. Have flaws in laminate performance appeared over time that has reduced its popularity ? The new hybrid planks I’ve seen look less convincing as wood.

As someone who has lived in floorboard homes for over 15yrs I can promise you, that you will regret putting hard flooring into a bedroom. Carpets in a bedroom are a very good idea for many reasons....
- It deadens sound in a room that needs to be quiet. You have no idea how much sound proofing carpet does until you remove it.
- You are very likely to walk around a bedroom in bare feet even if you wear slippers in the rest of the house. Your feet are an incredibly sensitive sensory organ. You will feel every tiny bit of grit on the floor with hard flooring, it will stick to your feet and then be transplanted into your bed. Or you will drive yourself crazy wanting to wash your feet again before getting into bed. On a cool morning you will miss the soft warm feel of carpet on your feet.
- Carpet adds a touch of luxury to a room and makes it look inviting and cosy. Floorboards look great in a high traffic areas, but sparse and uninviting in a bedroom.
- Vacuum cleaners are more effective on carpet than hard flooring, which really needs to be mopped in order to feel clean. Do you want to mop your bedrooms on a regular basis?

floor boards are allergy free so if you don;t live in a cold climate go for it

I have floorboards (real) in every room of my house. I live on the coast in SW Vic so it’s gets very chilly. I absolutely love my floorboards and the feel of them under foot (Kids and I go mostly barefoot). I have a rugs in lounge and entry. I don’t think they make the house cold and they are so easy to clean.
