What to do with a concrete pathway

We are moving to a 60's bungalow built really close to its side boundaries, with a narrow concrete pathway along each side, bordered by a hedge - and slightly lower adjoining land - one side, a low brick wall the other. One of the paths will need to be replaced since it's subsided over the years. what could we replace this concrete with, and what plants might survive/thrive planting along both pathways, in a rather shady stretch?

Sounds a lot like my 60s bungalow. I've still got a narrow concrete path on one side, which I've just been trying to clean up. I also had a concrete driveway and a concrete path right around the house. I had my driveway, front path and other side path replaced with block paving. The rear garden was covered in concrete slabs, so that and the rear concrete path have since been replaced with landscaping. So much concrete 😫

Many thanks, Sarah. I know what you mean - a lot of 'hard landscaping' has put us off looking at an awful lot of houses! Block paving sounds more attractive, certainly.

Thanks for your reply. Not sure which wall you are referring to? We can't block the bedroom that is next to the front door and we don't want people walking directly into the lounge. We also want the deck to be private. Do you mean to have the gate and doorbell outside in the open?

Your concrete specialist will have ways of sealing/coating the concrete in a low-slip/textured finish. This can be done by texturing the concrete while wet and by using a textured epoxy with low-slip properties. Ask your concrete specialist what they recommend when used in a wet environment such as a shower.

I would consider a small retaining wall perhaps 2-3 planks high this will provide support to the bank but also allow the pathway to remain clear and formal. The ferns seem to be doing well but could do with a tidy up. I would also prune the tree so it allows a bit more light into the section to help prevent dampness, you also want to take it away from the house, without destroying it's natural shape. As ferns seem to naturally want to grow there, you could continue that theme. Perhaps some other shade / cooler temperature type plants with some flowers could be a good addition. I am not sure which plants can tolerate the cold Dunedin winters, so you best contact is your local garden centre. You want plants that are lush all year round. Also have a look at other plants growing in the neighbourhood as that will give you a good idea of what does and doesn't do well in your climate. Good Luck.

Can you share a picture of the area with the footpath? There are many types of finishes you could use, and if I can see the area then I may also be able to suggest some plants. There are lots that love shade.😊

We have a concrete path in our side return. To dig it up, have it leveller and block paved was really expensive. Regular jet washing and lots of potted plants has helped improve the look. If the budget is bigger I’d definitely block pave
