Lighting and socket point design decisions

Hi there,

I'm at the stage of deciding where I should be placing my lighting and socket points.

Here is the floor plan that my wife and myself have put together with annotations of the points.

I wonder what does everyone thinks about it?

My quick two cents. More power points in study and where your plan to charge devices. A power point in the outdoor area is always handy. A down light in the kitchen needs to be between your head and the cook top when cooking, similarly in the powder room the lighting needs to do between the person’s head and the mirror. At the front of the house you have a down light, did you want a security light on the corner of the garage and/or feature lights in the front of the porch columns.

Similarly the lighting in the upstairs bathrooms is terrible for doing make up and hair. At the very least some light is needed at the front of the face and best some lighting on the side of the mirrors is appreciated.

Now it's beginning to work! Luv the rug! A few more red showstoppers, and I luv the post about matting your family pic, and larger frame for it. Looks like you might be a bit uncomfortable with the great post idea of moving your sofa out into the room away from wall. If so, could you accept putting it diagonally from the entrance doorway, across that corner where it is, stopping at the edge of your window? That's a bit of a move outward, still can see the fp and tv, and show off your new rug, which could go diagonally in front of the sofa. Then, if you like that, after a while you could move it on out as Deb K suggests. Sometimes intermediate steps are more doable for us than those big changes.Same with painting; if you could first paint just the fp wall, then later paint other walls...seems some color would really make it more homey. Would you cosider a quite contemporary fixture for the light in the center ceiling? Maybe a bit of red could go there!

Thank you so much for your comment after all this time. The colour you have suggested brightens the front door area beautifully and if the two red pots were painted in a tone to match, we think it would look great. Not sure if you can get Crestview doors in New Zealand but there must be something similar. We like the idea of going away from another cedar door - mainly because it would stand out too much while it was weathering. I don't know whether we would have been that brave but the tangerine works so well with the jade green of the joinery. I have re-laid all the stones and put a new wider front step in. The timber colour will soften down in time. I put a big pot in the garden to draw visitors to the front door and have added some colourful bromeliads to the garden alongside the house to make the area a bit more cheerful. We can't make a decision about what to do with a larger 'overhang' to protect the front porch yet - it is a project in progress. Thanks again for your post.

Oh, okay, may need to clarify some more. If you get a new 2 seater in place of the 2 white chairs, fine, but no blue chair at all next to the 'new' 2 seater. Won't be right with a blue chair too. So what ones are you planning to recover?. If getting rid of part of it, not understanding. 2 different styles placed next to each other won't look right. I wouldn't like old blue fabrics next to new fabrics or next to 2 different styles of furniture. New 2 seater and old blue chair next to each other, not good :)

Thanks for the replies! My wife suggested we talk to a local real estate agent, so i think that is a good idea... just that Im not sure how helpful they are likely to be if we arent selling yet :) As for saving for our dream house, I dont disagree, however if doing this up nicely over the next ~5 years or so while we live here nets us some extra in the eventual sale, then that of course will help us as well. Interesting thing happened today actually. I got a knock on the door and one of the older neighbours asked if he could take some lemons from the tree. I of course said yes. Anyway he was telling me he had lived in the street for 40 years. I asked him if the house had always looked like this, and he said no that ~30 years ago the old old owner did a massive renovation and pulled off the timber and put up the bricks and gutted the inside of the house. Interesting stuff!

Lastly put your family and dining room down lights on dimmers. And add a power point to the entry hall, probably near the indent with the bulkhead for a lamp.

Add a power point to vanity in powder room. Add an extra light in garage or move lights towards sides. Upstairs. Delete light over shower in en-suite. Delete two of three lights in hall outside bedrooms 2-4. Add more external lights and power pints depending on yard use at night.
U will need to Indicate how many power points at each location. Also need to look at where ligght switches go and any twoway switches and dimmers.l

It seems as if you have only one overhead fan , and that is outdoors ? Where is your home ? I have fans in every room , except utility rooms . I do have air con but the DC fans with dimmable lights are usually all that is needed in subtropical Queensland.
