How to quantify? Difficult to say. Smaller tiles = more grout = more scrubbing. On the floor though a benefit is a more textured surface can be less slippery, though there are other ways of achieving safety. Our first house had 70's style small tiles all over the bathroom, different style and proportions but probably similar ratio. I'm with Kate, never again.
we very happily hard dark coloured mosaic floor and wall tiles with matching grout for many years and deliberately chose mosaics again for new bathrooms as we find the small tiles are not so slippery and cleaning is no harder than any other tiles we've used although the lighter coloured grout can be challenging and we probably don't clean as often as we should
