Gardening advice / What to plant?

Hello,

We've just done a big garden reno and would love some advice on what to plant in our new garden beds, please see pictures below :)

We are yet to build our planter boxes which will go up the top where the path is, we'll put veggies in there, then fruit trees further up where the lawn will be.

We are in Melbourne. The garden bed next to the cubby is in mostly shade, the other one inside the retaining wall gets full afternoon sun.

Thanks in advance, I'm new to the gardening scene but very keen to learn!

What is the tree, and has the ground level been changed around it or is that the original ground level inside that garden bed?

For the bed with the tree you need something that spills - silver falls or any ground cover before adding some shrubs. For the bed near the clothesline I think you need some ground covers plus a few clumping plants. Have a look at the plant search on the Gardening with Angus site for specific plants.

Sorry I am so late coming to your site - you are an inspiration to all, homeowners and advisers alike. For your planting advice, I suggest you call Merrifield Garden Center to see if they will come out your way. They currently have wonderful garden centers in Merrifield and Fairfax (both in Fairfax County) and a new one in Gainesville, but they may come further south to wherever you reside. (www.MerrifieldGardenCenter.com) Even if they don't send designers to your area, they are worth a trip to see their huge selection for a day of pleasure and inspiration, or to pick up some plants. Looks like the palm tree look is working so I would blend that with some succulents maybe agave which can grow large and make great statement plants. Also stick with the stones.

Advice on adding colour to a very "brown" living space

Hi Rochelle, because you've gone with all natural tones, any strong colour just stands out too much and never looks quite right. Ditch the red. I think your idea of plants is a good one. Green works in with that natural pallette well. Get a lush green pot plant for your coffee table and maybe a bigger plant in a high pot that can stand on the ground. Buy a good sized, beautiful print of natural landscape and hang it on the best wall (instead of what you have). Get some funky cushions that work with the print and buy one of those luxurious fake fur throws in a colour similar to your mat. This will add more softness and texture to the room. I've added some pictures which aren't quite right, but hopefully give you more of an idea of what I'm getting at. Good luck!

Thanks so much for the ideas, I’ve just been onto Gardening with Angus website too, it’s brilliant for ideas!

Macy, we’ve added dirt in the garden bed with the tree. We’re going to dig a bit out around the tree and build a little wall or something so the dirt isn’t directly hugging the tree.

Yes, you need to have the soil level as original for the established tree.
