Exterior wall rendering

Hi all,

We are doing a bit of renovation and not sure if we should render the exterior wall and if so which colour would go along with the current terracotta roof. Your suggestions are much appreciated?

P/s: the house is old, already had some cracks, may have more in the future, so we are doing whole wall mesh + acrylic render + texture paint but not sure if that’s good enough to hold. We are replacing the current timber windows for double glazed uPVC as well so rendering could help seal all the gaps and give a more consistent finish.

Have you had the cracks investigated by a structural engineer?
Is it structural issues that need fixing before thinking about rendering?
Personally the style of your home is wonderful with that brick. I would get the cracks repaired instead of covering up the problem.

I think you would be devaluing your home by rendering it. As a period home it has appeal, possibly needs a fence and landscape refresh.

Blue gray window frames match the funky roof. The cedar is diametrically opposite on the color wheel as a orange tone. Usually the browner grays (sort of the light shade now on the stucco) do better with cedar to say modern, but since you have the blue gray, allow me to suggest that you just go as dark gray as you can - nearly charcoal on all the weatherboard. If you are in a high heat area (palms might or might not be - that might be the ocean on the horizon which might me an onshore breeze all the time) then you want a white. Not a blue-white but a warm white - bm maritime white is a good choice. With the cedar and the two blue-blue-gray elements, you need neutral without tone.

Heres what i was thinking of doing - change the roof and gutter to a dark grey or charcoal ... render the facade and paint a cream colour..changes the windows to a french style ( small squares) .. change the railing to a black traditional one..and put a darker cream trim around the windows and garage door.. Any other suggestions or comments ??

I understand going with the grey since it is an 80's style house. You could also do bright bold colors. I do not know if that is your style. I have attached a quick rendering of the gray scheme you mentioned. I prefer light colors above dark colors. This keeps in theme with the sky and earth. Makes the house seem more grounded. The dark entry also draws your eye to it especially with the light coming from the other side of the house. I have also attached a quick rendering of a blue scheme. It looks like you are on a beach and I thought this would blend in with the surroundings. If that is what you are seeking. Hope this helps.

Hi, We are on the hunt for a property to purchase in the Christchurch City and we noticed significant amount of houses contains of what we think is COLORBOND® steel on the exterior walls. It does look worrying since the building is relatively new and you start to see dents here and there makes you start wondering the long term issues you could face to maintain this. Thoughts?

Please do not render. Aged red brick facades are worth a lot more than rendered facades which have ugly 90s connotations

Thank you all for the honest suggestions. I love the red brick as well, was thinking about tuck pointing but too expensive. Not sure if repointing and a good soft wash would do the trick.

I think the white fence and white walls are what need changing, a natural timber or warm colour would be better
