Go on the roof and look at how many chimneys there are. Has each fireplace got their own chimney, or some may be shared if back onto each other. The age of the chimney bricks may tell you whether they are original or a later addition.

I would not call it a California bungalow, I would call it a typical weatherboard home of the 1920s.

California bungalows were a different architectural style

I don’t think it’s a single style. It is an appealing little cottage that seems to combine the single fronted look of a Victorian with the roof line similar to a Cal Bung. Can you see on the title when it was built? My 1950s cottage has some Cal Bing panelling, Art Deco fire place and ornate cornices. It all adds up to the charm. I would bet that your first pic of the fire place has a reproduction mantle and new tiles in the surround and health. It’s a bit hard to see the tiles on the others but I would say that the surrounds, fire place insets and tiles are original features and worth keeping.

The last photo appears to probably where the kitchen was as there is a concrete hearth on the other side. Thank you for all your comments, but I’m still unclear as to what I should replace the the reproduction one with, any ideas?

You can find surrounds that are more sympathetic and similar to the other two at demo yards, vintage shops and Facebook. Depending on what else you’re doing with the room I’d paint it a lighter colour and see if you like it better.

Oh, so your not talking about fire places, but mantle and fire place surrounds. A good carpenter or handy man, may be able to replicate the 1920 simple design of the two original surrounds. Otherwise as bigreader said, check out social media websites.

The second and third of your pics are fireplaces typical of the era. They have less or no scroll work, often have a mirror in the centre and have straighter lines.
