Hi Calypso. We would need a lot more information to be really useful, but to start with I suggest you look at as many rooms as you can to see what you like. I've put, for example, two very different ways of using it below. What's your style? Crisp, romantic, girly, quirky? Maybe start with whichever of these two rooms you like best and then think about what you would like to change in the room to bring it closer to being right for you. Then look for other styles of rooms, either on Houzz or on Google images or in magazines. Work out what makes you say, "Yes, please!" Then determine what furniture you have that needs to stay -- if the colour's not right, can you paint it? If you could give us a couple of pics of the room as it is now, with that information, and an idea of what kind of room you dream of, you could get more useful help. In my opinion, a reader needs good bedside lights and a well-lit reading chair, as well, of course, as bookshelves -- and there are all kinds of great ways to fit shelves into a room. Do you also need homework space in your bedroom? There are all sorts of super ways to accessorise your room to reflect your love of reading, too. But first things first ....

I like your plan but I don't think a pattern on the bed wall is a good idea. The carpet already has a lot of pattern so I'd keep that wall a solid, dark color, from the rug. Add some sparkle like mercury lamps for the bedside tables for interest.

Hi Bradford Rice, I understand that it can be difficult to decorate for someone this age. The best place for you to start is to specifically ask him some leading inquisitive questions like, "What do you like to do most?" "Whats your favourite part of your room and your least favourite?" If you can find an item which is dear to him (like his guitar, or playstation remote; yes I did say that! or favourite sweatshirt) then this gives you a springboard to build from. There are some amazing wallpapers out there (check out Mr Perswall graffiti range, or distressed timber board wallpaper) which without too much investment can transform a room quickly. Try to simplify your colour palette and limit it to just a couple of colours, dirty pinks are in vogue along with greys, and animal skins, remember that bedding colours bring a whole new feel to a room and if it lacks natural light keep the colours masculine but subdued with a taupe linen bedspread. Incorporate some chunky texture if you can by way of a thick weaved carpet rug or woven rustic lamp shade, and some shelving storage to encourage him to pick his stuff up off the floor!
