I agree the yellow is way too much. I’d change the colour to something you love!

I don't think white would ever look silly. I think it would be better in one colour. We used dulux Buff It Quarter (which is a warm neutral) with vivid white trims. Or as Michaela says, go with a colour you love, but for me it would need to be soft/subdued, e.g. a pale dusty green if you want green. If you go with a pale colour be prepared for maybe 3 coats to cover that yellow - though this is just my amateur opinion from our own painting experience.

Do you like the white skirting boards and door jambs , against the yellow ?

I do , but even I think the whole place done in that yellow is too much . But if you like the contrast , there looks to be a batten half or 2/3rds of the way up the wall -- do above that line in white , and see what you think ?

Another trick I'd try would be to get a wallpaper with yellow chevons ( as close to the wall colour as you can ) but of course with at least 50% white too , and do a feature wall in each room in the wallpaper . Its risky , but it will tone down the yellow but keep some context ,

Wow! What a fabulous space, I agree with big reader, going white would look beautiful, just a few inspiration photos for you.

@User thanks for replying! I hadn't considered wallpaper - def something to research! I never thought I'd ever look at wallpaper again after growing up in Glasgow in the 60's and 70's :)

It will look awsome, it’s a fabulous space, love these light fittings also, and with doing your theatre room in a charcoal, fabulous.

I'm not a fan of wallpaper on all 4 walls , but to me its a great way to make 1 wall a feature , and it adds that extra texture and even a different look within the same colour pallette .

@Julie Herbert Thanks Julie - I have also found some old photos from an earlier sale of the property when the walls were grey - much better than yellow!!! but think i am still with you on the white - will need to play with a few white options to patch test !

@Julie Herbert stll don;t like the light fittings !!! And maybe need to lose the bars on the windows to remove all the 'squares' not sure yet - haven't moved in yet !!

Such a difference painted in a lighter colour. It will look beautiful in a white. We took the bars off the windows of our old house, left with large clear windows looked great, I think it would look beautiful and suit the house better, yes light fittings are such a hard choice, there are so many beautiful ones available, once living in your home you will be more able to see what your room needs. If you want something completely different you may need to look at o/s websites but there are great Aussie designers as well.

White all the way from my perspective but it also depends on what furniture you have and art work too.

I would not do wallpaper in such a big space. For a start, your wastage on rolls will be horrific if matching patterns.

Maybe a feature wall in one colour, probably the one with the sloping top to the ceiling. Even with doors in it, you could paint the doors and trims etc the same colour. For a feature wall to be effective it needs to be a fairly simple shape so choose wisely. Colour choise will come down to furnishings and personal choice. Also, are you in a warm climate or a cool one? Do you want to warm up or cool down the room?

Alternatively you could paint the ceiling a colour. Similar criteria as for the walls. If you paint it darker than the walls it will pull it down in height.

It's a big space so big lights will be awesome. Love some of Julie's suggestions. The attached 'Chip' light from Italy is something I have been trying to find a project for. I just love it. Comes in several sizes and colours but not cheap!!!!. Think about cleaning if they are hung high above the floor, especially for glass or white fittings as they show the dust. I'd do something that runs along the space and maybe creates nice patterns on the ceiling and upper walls to give the space some interest.

Definately get rid of the small bars on the windows but do I see some on internal doors too? Will you change those as well?

thanks for your comments @CHRISTINE HALL ARCHITECTS LTD Yes, def. no wallpaper in the main living area and yes, I would potentially remove the bars from windows and doors - they are everywhere! Will start with a small window upstairs to see how easy, or not, it is. I also hope to be able to open up the upper wall above the kitchen - where those two high internal windows are - the area behind them is a sitting area/study leading to a door the master bedroom. I'd love to open it up and put in a ballustrade of some sort with some nice lamps! Furniture and artwork to be decided. I have a 2 and a 3 seater low leather lounge in white and artwork is up for grabs - but I'd go for casual and fun and not formal. Like Ryan Fowler type stuff but not sure that's quite the right choice - will think on it a lot more - depends what I can do with the upper wall too. Thanks again for commenting!

Just a quick comment on art. If you don't already have your own artwork for this house yet, consider the following..

Firstly, art is really personal so chose things that you fall in love with. You wont regret it. Find something that has personal meaning to you such as, by someone you know or is from a place that is special to you or art that represents your own interests or places you have been.

Secondly, the space is big with a large amount of high level walls so be brave and go big and as bold as your budget and personal taste allows. Don't put lots of small peices in this space unless it is part of a larger installation. It wont do it justice. With the high walls, you could even look at wall sculpture, something with some 3 dimensionality to grab the eye but make sure it does not conflict with your lighting in terms of form and how the light falls on the walls.

Have fun choosing, there is soooo much out there.
