Painting our kitchen cabinets - should we??

We are gradually freshening up the interior of our 2000 brick & tile duplex, in preparation for sale. I decided the timber-look laminate kitchen cabinets should be painted and bought the Dulux renovation laminate paint in 'Misty Moore' before we decided to sell, but now I can't decide if it might put off prospective buyers? Is it too 'daring' and should I stick to plain white cabinets? I love colour, but I know some like a very neutral pallette in the kitchen. I am definitely swapping out the silver handles with black ones. But with the colour option I need help!!!???I've included a photo of our kitchen cabinets as they are now, then someone else's kitchen where they used 'misty moore' just on the lower cabinets.

Do not paint the cabinets, leave for the next owners to renovate if they wish.

All the suggestions above are perfectly good. However, when you have a house that is entirely painted, the options are so endless that it's easy to get stuck. I'd advise either finding photos of comparable homes in colors that you really love, and reproducing a similar palette on your home… or upload a picture of your house to a colorizing site, and play around with various combos. Sherwin Williams has a Color Visualizer that is decent. I don't mind a white house, but feel that the black trim is a bit harsh. On the railing especially- it feels like it is outlining itself too much. Reduce the contrast between the body and the rail and it will enhance the house rather than overwhelm it. You have a lot of choices, so just experiment and go with what resonates with you.

Thanks for all the great ideas everyone and sorry I didn't explain the polycarbonate a bit better :) This is along the lines of what we'll be using... http://www.psp.co.nz/building-brands/corrugated-sheeting/suntuf-polycarbonate The area is an absolute sun trap and we're hoping to use it as an extension to our living space, especially on rainy days! I've just sent my husband out to get a few pots of different stains for is to try - darkest brown (cedar) and a lighter brown (rustic oak) both by Cabots + the black we already have. Hopefully we can decide between one of those! I probably should have mentioned we will have black aluminium pool fencing running along the top of the second retaining wall - so the real question is do we keep everything black (pool fencing, horizontal fence, retaining walls and pergola) or do we go with a dark (or even light) brown for the pergola and retaining walls.... We just keep going around in circles at the moment. Decisions, decisions! Thanks again :)

Without knowing any more info , I'd say its near impossible for anyone but you to know what colour/s to choose -- do you want the house to blend in but have its own style , or do you want it to stand out ? What colours are your main furniture items and even kitchen etc ? For xxample , if keeping the beige walls , how about doing the eves and gutters and garage door in a tangy ( bright , but not glaring ) orange -- this would work with the existing colours and not require a complete repaint . BUT if your kitchen was mainly various shades of , say , green and teal , and your lounge suite and duvet covers were mainly blue hues , that may 'feel' funny , clashing with the exterior ? Of course , blue and beige exterior may not work with the brown aluminium , as youve recognised . Another option ( a bit hard to tell from the pictures ) is that a light grey ( repaint the beige ) with mid-charcoal base boards may work with the brown aluminium , then a bright colour on the gutters and front and rear doors to suit -- anything from sea blue to bright yellow , orange , red , even white or off-white would probably work .

Because you are selling I wouldn't paint the timber cabinets instead consider changing out the tiles lights, blinds etc, for a popular Japandi style

Benchtop can remain the same just keep it simple, the new owners will have their own ideas.

Agree with siriuskey, keep the timber cabinets, change handles, a new tap, style your shelves and bench top using beautiful items, give it a minimal but stylish makeover, a painted kitchen needs to be done to perfection otherwise it can look a bit ‘painted’ leave as it just clean, makeover with simple stylish, quality products.

Unless your painting the bench as well, as I do not think the cabinets misty Moore and blue bench would be appropriate for selling.
A very clean kitchen with all appliances clean and in good working order is more important.

They say a kitchen sells a home, but unless you are will to commit to a big Reno I would not do any upgrade. Remove all excessive decor items and get a stylist in to style your whole home. That is where to spend money.

I agree that the cupboards should be left as is. I think more modern black handles would look good too, but I do think that if you want to improve the look, the benchtop and splashback should be changed. The blue definitely dates the house. Even a laminate benchtop and plain white subway tiles would completely change the look.

This will depend on where the house is and what price level it sits at - if there are a number of other projects in the house that need updating (flooring, bathrooms, etc) then selling as is is probably the best idea as the new owners may wish to take on a bigger project.

The timber is the best bit of current kitchen. Would not paint. I'd do black handles. The benchtop is the biggest problem

I think the biggest sin here is the floor tiles -- i know its sort of dishonest , but i'd get a good oil based black / charcoal paint , thin it with turps , give the tiles 2 or 3 coats . Combined with the cupboard handles in black , it will look passable .

You'd probably even get back the cost of actually re-doing the floor tiles , depending on your area and how quick you want to sell etc .

I don't like the blue benchtop , but it wouldn't stop me buying the place ; but the tiles would unless I got a decent discount ( say , $30-50k off a $500k house ) , otherwise I'd walk .

Pottsy99 if you offered $30-50k off the home because of the tiles....If I was the owner, I would let you walk. A large house to strip tiles is approx $3000. Installation and purchase of new tiles/floors approx anything to $15k.-$20k......not $30-50k..... maybe New Zealand is a bit more expensive.

That is my point -- I don't like the tiles , so I'd put in a lowball offer if I was interested in the rest of the house -- I would almost thank someone turning that offer down .

I'd liken it to an E tyoe Jag -- depending on condition , they go for $150-250k here . But if someone had painted it lime green or fuschia pink , I'd offer $50k less , even though you could get it stripped and repainted for under $15k -- I wouldn't care if I owned it or not .
